When I first start my 99 durango 5.2l v8 4wd 148,000 miles, I hears a loud ticking noise coming from engine possible fan or belt area? Sound goes away after the engine warms up. It also won't start sometimes unless I keep my foot on the gas pedal for a few min and while driving it at 50mph or high once I take my foot off the gas the rpms drop and feels like the engine is braking itself. No check engine light is on, I just changed the oil at 145,00 miles and soon after replaced all spark plugs wires and the coil. Just put on a new serpentine belt and changed both o2 sensors. Was thinking of changing out he IAC and TPS as well?
The TPS would be what I would do had that problem once myself solved the problem. as for the ticking noise sounds like a lifter is bleeding down as long as the noise goes away you will be ok. But may I suggest that if you are going to keep the vehicle for awhile longer you might want to have a set of lifters put in it.

Check and clean idle air control valve
check for vacuum leaks
suspect idle air control valve

It sounds to me like there is a problem with your Idle Speed Control solenoid/motor. (ISC) These can sometimes fail without turning on the Check Engine light. If the Check Engine light is coming on while you are driving, you should have the computer system checked out first. This will lead you to the proper fix.

I had the same problem and it was the alternator bearing, but before you replace it, make it sure it is the alternator, because it could be any bearing
