1997 Volvo 850. Car shakes when put into reverse

My daughter just bought a 1997 Volvo 850. She started the car this morning and put it into reverse, and the car started shaking, and the check engine light came on. Does anyone have any ideas?

My 1997 Volvo 850 always needs to have a jump start in the morning. I havent changed the sparks plugs in years, could this be the problem?

Sounds like a battery problem. Make sure that all your lights are off inside the car. Check your visor light too. Ive seen broken visors that wont turn the bulb off when shut and drain the battery over night.

Get your battery tested also to make sure it can hold the cranking amps needed for starting.

Hi!

Sounds to me like the engine in fact is getting gas when idleing, but not getting enough air. Therefore my 2 cents are on you IACV (Idle Air Controller Valve). It's a small steel cylinder suspended in a rubber piece on the front of your throttle body, and its job is to supply the engine with air when idleing. This is a necessity since the throttle body valve is closed when the gas pedal isn't pressed. Take out the IACV and clean it thoroughly, also make sure that the air going from it is not hindered by any gunk or deposits on its way to the intake manifold.
(You could have someone hold their hand on the IACV when you take your foot of the gas pedal. If nothing happens it's probably dead or stuck. If something does happen there is still a chance that the air is hindered somewhere).

Good luck, let us know if this didn't help!

check for compression on all cylinders if you ran the engine hot to long you may have blown the head gasket another way you would know is by filling up the radiator with water and then with the cap off turn the starter like if your going to start the engine if you see the water jump out of radiator then you have a blown gasket another way is by checking the oil if it looks like coffee with milk then the gasket is blown, I hope this information is useful good luck

Check out this site. You will have to register as a Volvo owner, but you should be able to access the original manual. If you have trouble finding it, let me know, I'll try to help find another source.
