Some simple things can work. Does the key turn? No? spray some releasing oil, (WD40 type), into the key hole and leave it to soak in for at least ten minutes. You might need a small screwdriver to open the spring loaded cover on the front of the lock. If the key turns try pushing down ******* the trunk lid to take the pressure of the latch.
Can you get access to the trunk from inside the vehicle by dropping the rear seats? Get a helper to push down on the trunk lid, climb into the trunk from inside the vehicle. There should be an emergency pull cord in the centre of the vehicles rear panel. Pull and hold this cord and get your helper to repeatedly push down and pull up on the trunk lid. This might 'pop' the trunk.
You will either have gas charged struts or springs that are supposed to hold the weight of the trunk lid. If you have struts you will simply need to change them out and new ones are readily available at your local auto parts store. If you have springs you might need to gather replacements at your local salvage yard.
there is a fork that holds the cylinder in place that has fallen off. this fork is made of spring steel and is slightly curved. many older cars had these
you will have to get the boot open first and you will find a hinge at either side Ther should be 2 bolts at each hinge that screw up into the metal bracket. Remove these carefully( Need a mate to hold the lid)
You can go to a auto dismantler and buy a used one that will be cheeper than a new one. They are not too hard to install if you are strong and not afraid to climb into the trunk. Requires two people to do it. one to hold the trunk up all the way and the other to get in and snap the spring back into place. You place the spring end in position first then locate the torsion end and pushup and back and snap it in place. The only hitch is if the spring didn't break and the bracket itself did, then you will need a body shop to reweld and repair the mounting bracket. Option #2, get a stick and use it to prop up and hold the trunk open when you are using it. Good Luck, RAC
To re-connect the bar. Have an assistant hold the lid while you reinstall it. I know this part is tricky.First look to the L/S and see a grduated adjustment fixture ( where the rod fell off from ) I would use a 6' 1/2" drive extention with a deep 1/2 " drive socket.The trunk torque bar ( spring ) has a app 3/8"wide end pointing down when held. Place socket/ext over end , applying pressure to turn the pint of the spring towards you, then latch in appropriate groove ( see R/S to gauge groove location ). A pipe can replace the tools. Hope it helps
one of those bars come out of its bracket ( on my 89 cougar)
none of the local shops would touch it, no even the body shops.
so i just connect one end to the lid, like normal, then with a pry bar, pryed out the other end and put in a small block of wood (two by four) then released the pry bar. took another bite pryed it out again then added another block until i got the desired spring back into the torsion rod. yes that's (jury rigged) but my trunk works almost like it should. if you need i can send you a picture of what i did.
the hinges for the trunk will need replacing. not the shocks. about $60 a piece from VW. do it yourself about 4 bolts. just get someone to hold the trunk for you. its not necessary to paint the new hinges
