2002 cavalier hard start, rough idle when trac light is on. light comes on and off intermittently for the last month. now the service engine light came on with a ect votage high and a reqest for pcm to ignore the ect. The ect was just replaced so im running new wires for it, but it doesnt explain the trac light, hard start and idle.

Go to an auto parts store and have them scan for a code. That should give you an indication of what is wrong with it.

See the YouTube video on how to repair broken solder joints on your instrument cluster connector. This takes about an hour and solves a number of intermittent problems. I think it may be under "no start" problems.

You need to check your plug wires for cracks and wear. The best way to know if they are bad is to run your engine at nightr and look for any time of blue arcing spark coming from any of the wires. I believe that replacing the wires will solve your problem.

There is a malfunction in you antilock brake/traction control system. When the TRAC light is on, the computer is trying to tell you either 1. That the traction control is active and is controlling your brakes, engine and transmission to stop a wheel skid, or 2. There is is a malfunction in your traction control system.

In the first case above, the TRAC light will only be on for a few seconds until the conditions causing your wheels to slip no longer exist. If the light is staying on even though there is no way your wheels are slipping or skidding, then this is a malfunction. You must scan both your Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and your Antilock Brake System (ABS) module to properly diagnose a problem with this system.
