Its most likely either or, if its a high pitched sound its probably the wheel bearing. If its a growling/grinding/clunking sound its probably the CV Joint. However, your problem more than likely lies in either/both.

Your Power Steering pump is were the noise comes from, the system fluid must be flushed until it's clean and the PS Pump replaced, around $300 to fix.

SOURCE: Transfer case is making a grinding noise in 2wd,

Depending on how long the grinding has been going on, the IWE ( integrated wheel ends ) might need to be replaced.

The problem that causes the symptoms is either cracked vac lines from the IWE solenoid, or a faulty IWE solenoid.

Check the vac lines to the IWE, this is the block diagram of the setup

Use a visual inspection and vac tester ( might vac with a gauge on it ) to test the lines.

SOURCE: Grinding sound - front passenger wheel well Ford F-150 in 2 wheel

Today and over the weekend .I too had the same problem. Took it to the dealer and they tested everything and could not find the problem. Did vac test on the lines, Test drove it with code tester to see if there was any problems . Checked the hubs... They replaced the IWE solenold. Just hope that is the fix and it didn;t damage anything else... Thanks for the above info!

SOURCE: 2004 stx f150 right front wheel grinding noise,

I agree with duane_wong on this one ( not like he was looking for my approval :) ), it sounds like a problem with the IWE ( Integrated Wheel End ) on that side.
Quick test, when you are in 4H ( or 4L ) does the noise still happen ?
I would say cracked vacuum line to the IWE, or a problem with the vacuum diaphragm in the IWE. You can test by having the motor running in park, and in 2H, and check the vacuum line at the IWE for vacuum. Make sure you test to the vacuum line, not the vent line ( ends in the engine compartment, not hooked to anything )

This is a block diagram of the IWE vacuum system

1990 Ford Bronco. I dont know much about vehicles but the shifter shifts into 4 High but doesn't engage the 4-wheel drive and I can't shift it to neutral or 4 Low. Any advice is accepted thank you?

MANUAL TRANSMISSION? or auto, well no matter
the transfer case matters./
FIRST TIME EVER USING PART TIME 4WD, CAR?
IF YES IT ONLY WORKS OF ROAD OR ICE/SNOW, NO ON PAVEMENT UNLESS COVERED IN ICE SNOW.
IT IS NOT FULL TIME 4WD OR AWD.
i CAN NOT SHIFT THE 4WD LEVER TO NEUTRAL YOU MEANT?
WELL THAT MEANS YOU WOUND UP THE FRONT AND REAR AXLES LIKE A SPRING,AND THE ONLY CURE IS 1 WHEEL(TIRE) MOVE TO DIRT.?(ICE) OR MORE.
THEN IT UNWINDS.
This car has no center differential.
and is not AWD or full time 4wd,
it s part time, means (ice or dirt ) said simple
moving car like that steering goes wild and fights you.
4wd is pure ww2 jeep like or like my new jeep wrangler
the user guide lost 32 years ago tells this same story..
of dry pavement locked , are you.
jack one wheel off ground and it un-winds.
with PART time 4wd, turning the inside wheel spin slower
and you wind it up just like clock. a very unsafe practice

4WD Problem

Shut off the vehicle. Place the transfer case indicator into whatever gear you want and then start the vehicle. You placed the transfer case into neutral while the engine was running in gear that's why all the grinding.

1989 bronco II 4wd automatic. sister recently gave it to me. been in 4wd one time years ago. has automatic hubs. will not go into 4wd. lights by push button do no light up. any suggestions.

There is a motor on the back of the transfer case that controlls the 4x4 and it will "gum" up from lack of use. I would start with that.

I am going to tow my 87 Bronco II behind my motorhome. It is a 5sp. I believe I am to put the tranny in neutral and the transfer case in neutral, is that right? Also do I unlock the steering wheel?

all the wheels and transmision should be free to move and for your piece of mind, if the car fell off the towhitch, you would want the car to head towards the soft verge, NOT towards oncoming traffic.so lock the steering wheel turned slightly right.also make sure you fit an anti snake device.

I have an 87 Bronco, full size with 5.0L efi. I can shift from 2wd to 4wd his with no problem. I can also put the transfer case in Neutral. The transfer case will not go into 4wd low. Also must shut...

This is going to be in the synchros in the T-case. The most economical way is to either have the unit rebuilt or replaced used. If you need any other info, let me know.

Can i take a newer bronco's 4wd with push button and put it into my 87 bronco with no complications other than wiring? also can i change the steering colum to a newer bronco's steering colum with no...

you could but the color of the wires might not be the same and it would take forever to figure out how if youve never done it before of know the wiring diagram or how to read one. and if the two trucks have push button 4x4 the switches might be the same

The 4 wheel drive doesn't work in my 89 Ford Bronco

The sound is not coming from the glove compartment, it is coming from the panel behind the drivers seat, that's where the relays and computer are located.
The relays click and apply power to a transfer case motor.
The motor attempts to turn a shaft that engages the front drive shaft.
When the computer thinks the shaft has NOT turned it tries again.
It will try three times then quit, figuring the shaft has not turned.

Get someone to crawl under the vehicle and engage the 4WD (just turn on the ignition- do not start the engine) See if they can hear the motor attempt to turn the shaft, it will make a clicking sound.
If not the connections or the motor may be bad.

I have found the most probable cause is the relays on the control board.
If you are technically adept --
you can remove the small side panel from behind the drivers seat and remove the control board. (remove the power plugs first)
Clean the relay contacts and bend them a little to give them more 'wipe' to keep them clean longer.
Put it back in and turn on the ignition.
Then push the RESET button on the side of the board.
Try the in / out 4WD a couple of times. If it doesn't work turn off the ignition, turn it back on and push the reset button again.
