2000 SE Altima, 135k miles and issues in question are things that have been replaced. The timing chain, radiator, altenator, front axels, etc have been replaced 2-3 years ago. Runs like a new car, good a/c, heat, no complaints. What I have lacked behind is changing the oil, I know, I know but I kept putting it off. Driving one day, my car completely shut down, all the dash board lights lit up, steering was impossible and brakes were just like stepping on concrete ground, no pressure at all. Once the tow truck guy came to pick the car up, tried to start it and he immediately diagnosed it to be the timing chain. The mechanic that thoroughly looked at it, said nothing of the timing chain, but that its the motor....and there's no oil. Once again, having it towed to my garage, THAT particular tow truck guy, said it was the timing chain. I dont know, but I do know it needs oil. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
There are 2 belts. belts not chain for the nissan cars since 1990. once the belt brake, it also take the valve with it. so, replace the belts, and have the valve rebuild. total cost between $500-1000, depends on where you have it done. if you go to dealer then you can double the price.
If the engine spins over very fast like it is not under any kind of pressure then the timing chain/belt has failed. There is a considerable amount of damage that can accrue when this happens. You may not be able to replace the chain/belt and repair the problem now. It may actually be cheaper to replace the motor now than repair the old one. So they may both be correct. Hope this helps. Good luck.
