00 SE Altima, Is it the timing chain or the motor or both??

2000 SE Altima, 135k miles and issues in question are things that have been replaced. The timing chain, radiator, altenator, front axels, etc have been replaced 2-3 years ago. Runs like a new car, good a/c, heat, no complaints. What I have lacked behind is changing the oil, I know, I know but I kept putting it off. Driving one day, my car completely shut down, all the dash board lights lit up, steering was impossible and brakes were just like stepping on concrete ground, no pressure at all. Once the tow truck guy came to pick the car up, tried to start it and he immediately diagnosed it to be the timing chain. The mechanic that thoroughly looked at it, said nothing of the timing chain, but that its the motor....and there's no oil. Once again, having it towed to my garage, THAT particular tow truck guy, said it was the timing chain. I dont know, but I do know it needs oil. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There are 2 belts. belts not chain for the nissan cars since 1990. once the belt brake, it also take the valve with it. so, replace the belts, and have the valve rebuild. total cost between $500-1000, depends on where you have it done. if you go to dealer then you can double the price.

If the engine spins over very fast like it is not under any kind of pressure then the timing chain/belt has failed. There is a considerable amount of damage that can accrue when this happens. You may not be able to replace the chain/belt and repair the problem now. It may actually be cheaper to replace the motor now than repair the old one. So they may both be correct. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I have a 2002 Nissan Altima 2.5L. When i drive more than 11 miles, it sound like the timing chain is rattlling inside the engine. But if i stop and shut the car off for like ten minutes then the rattl

There is, in fact, a timing chain on your car. Unfortunately, the Altimas around this year have issues with stretched chains. This car probably should not be driven. If the chain breaks, you will destroy your valves and need to get your head rebuilt. The parts for this repair can be had for under 100 dollars, however, the labor involved is quite a lot. I was quoted $1000.00 for the job and thought it was too much until I got into it. Very time consuming and not for a beginner mechanic. If you know someone who is a VERY good mechanic, maybe they can give you a break on the labor.

I have a 2003 Nissan Altima. Do I have a timing Chain or Belt. How long does the timing chain last? I have 195,000 miles on my car.

Timing chain. Normally they will last for at least 150,000 miles or longer. If it becomes noisy or car is hard to start, backfires, or performance is sub-par have it checked.

Whats the bottom line on '05 nissan altima with 3.5 motor.does it have a timing chain or belt and does it make a difference on wether it needs to be replaced at 105,000 miles as the recommended mileage

It's a chain, and there are complete R&R instructions at AutoZone.com: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0996b43f80381cca.

If 105K is the recommended interval, I think I would at least perform an inspection for stretching and maybe make sure the tensioner is still holding it tight.

I have a nissen primera 18000 the malfuntion light stays on indecating timing chain is stretched and needs replacing. only done 45000 miles. it only came on when bad weather started. could be sensor. any...

the chain could be worn - check it before you suspect anything else... dont go off the mileage - lots of things can make a chain or belt wear prematurely, have it checked to be on the safe side.
=======
Try cleaning the area around the timing chain of all grime and oil, and re-oil the timing chain with the reccomended lubricant.

That's a load of **** they are feeding you.The timing chain tentioner has a fault and not tentioning the chian.I think you have done a good thing keeping it on synthetic oil.That causes less wear on moving parts than other oils.
