I have a 1998 Mercury Sable, I have noticed for the past couple years that my car has a rough idol when stopped at lights or idling too long for example through a drive thru where my car sits for 5-10 minutes in a slow moving line. It doesn't happen all the time, maybe 2-3 times a week if that. I have changed air filter, spark plugs and fuel filter was changed back in 2007. Recently within the past couple months it has gotten worse. Last month I was running errands and I came back out to my car and turned the key, my car turned on and then turned right back off, so I tried it again and the second try I had to rev the engine as soon as my car started in order to get it going, took it to my local mechanic and they couldn't find anything wrong with the car. Today, one month later, I had a bunch of errands to run. I was running errands turning my car off and on for about 2 hours every 15-20 minutes. I got to my next to last stop of the day and turned the key to the ignition and the RPMs were at about 1000-2000(very low), felt like my car was losing power, my steering wheel started getting tight, car shuddering. I backed out and was in the parking lot, came to a stop behind someone at a stop sign and my car stalled (service/engine lights came on and RPMs went to 0). I turned the car off and turned it back on-still same issues with feeling like it was losing power, I immediately got on a main street going about 40mphs, once my car was steady at higher speed for about 5-10 seconds it ran fine, took it to the house for 30 minutes to rest and took it back out and ran fine the rest of the day through remainder of errands. Some one please help. I would really like to fix this issue.
Have a pressure test done on the fuel manifold to check for pump-regulator pressure and filter performance. You state that the filter was last changed in 2007 so it is well past it's blocked up date .. Run fault codes . replace the canister . Have a compression test done as the engine is getting long in the tooth and may need refreshing .. Check that the cat converter is still operational as they will block up the exhaust system and cause poor performance

Has your engine gotten wet? Sounds like water around your spark plug boots down in the port around the spark plugs. If there is any water down there, make sure you blow it out with air compressor prior to removing plugs, or it will drain directly into the engine. Another scenario, could be EGR valve or related parts. Is your check engine light on? With that rough of a ride, it should be. If it is an auto parts store should be able to read the code to help pin point the problem. Good Luck!

this can be tough one to find, as you know if it does not act up wile it is in the shop then we cant find the problem, but i have seen this one before, under the hood there is a fues relay box on the left side of the engine compartment, the next time the van acts up tap on this box and see if the engine starts, on the bottom of this box is a power control unit, we see these things go bad allot, this unit controls the power for the fuel pump circuit and if it fails to power up the pump then of course the engine will start on the fuel that is in the line then stall and not restart intill the thing kicks on the pump again, this unit also controles many other things it is a computer that controls the ground circuits for the relays that are in the box that is on top of it. if it starts after tapping on it then replace it, there is a prt # ans a calabration # on the unit you can take these #'s and go to a salvage yard and find one that matches the #'s on yours. if after tapping on this unit it still does not start, test for power at the plug in at the top of the fuel tank to see if there is 12 volts at the dark green/white wire wile you are cranking the engine if there is not power it most likely is still the power unit under the hood....good luck
let me know if there is any thing else i can i do for you.

There are several possibilities, but based on how you described the symptoms I suggest a profile igniton pickup. On these systems the failure usually begins as dropping a cylinder occasionally, like a misfire, mostly during high underhood temperatures, will manifest into stalling and finally into a stall with no resart condition. Symptoms are most likely to occur in summer. The pickup is inside the distributor and the distributor must be disassembled to install it,the trickiest part being the removal and installation of the distributor drive gear. They are iron and easily broken. The simplest solution is another distributor. The ignition modules typically do not fail in this manner, but this is classic for the pickup coil. A code for loss of pip signal should be present, it is possible for a code to not be present, though very unlikely. Having worked on these systems for years this would be my first area of diagnosis.

Actually I just looked up the repair ticket and the fuel pump assembly was replaced not the fuel filter. Will this make a difference in your suggestion?
I am suggesting that it will but to prove one way or the other for the cost have the filter replaced anyway as it is a cheap item to fix.
