2007 Chevy Avalanche just started having some sort of transmission problem this morning. Reverse works normal and so does 1st and 2nd gear. Drive (4th) and 3rd act like the transmission is still in neutral. If I start driving in 2nd gear then I can shift into 3rd and drive when the truck is already going at higher speeds 25 to 40 mph. As soon as I have to slow down I reapply the gas and it's not in gear again. I then have to put it back into 2nd or 1st to move forward. Please help! Just sold my home and need my truck to move to another state.
From what you are describing, it is possible either the 3-4 actuator is no longer playing with the 3rd & 4th clutch packs, only way to know for certain is to hook up the good ol' pressure gauge to trans. system, yeah, you think the Chevrolet dealer should know this right?
Sell it now if you can!

Hello;
Are you getting the check engine light? If so the electronics may have gone out. You may not need a rebuild but you won't know till you pull the oil pan on the transmission and inspect the contents. You may also have lost the neutral safety switch. It is mounted on the drivers side of the transmission. Check those out first and let me know what codes you get.
For Ponchoboy; the clunking and hissing you hear are teminal root causes. Drop the oil pan and if it has a lot of filings and metal it is time for a rebuild.
Hope this helps; Rate me highly;

i had the same problem, its the torque converter. I took my 05 c/a in because i was having shifting problem, the long and short of it is there is a breather on the tranmission that sucks in water from the road. the water and the atf dont mix. the dealer put in a torque converter and changed the fluid and installed a redesigned transmission breather.

How many miles? Have you maintained, serviced trans in past or just waited for this day to wonder what happened?

One thing most car and truck owners forget about. Have fluid changed in transmission check owners manual. most suggest after first 100k miles and so on.
