Idles high from first to second gear .

When you first start it , it revs high , and when you shift from first to second gear , it revs high , and even from first gear to neutral , it revs high .

How high does it rev? The things that jump to mind: oxy sensor (constantly idling high and slight fluctuation), the switches on the clutch pedal.

It revs about three rpm from first to second gear mainly . Sometimes even does it in neutral in the middle of a shift . Both o2 sensors are new , im replacing the idle control valve to see if that works . Its as if the idle sticks in between shifts , then finally goes down after holding in the clutch .

Define idles high like its going high rpms before shifting or the engine itself is high reving if its high rpming when shifting its mostly you tranny going out you can try tranny fix oil I used it on my truck when it had shifting problems and ive had no problems since it takes a few days to work though and if its the motor itself it could be a lot of things but I dont know much of the problem based on what you told us

SOURCE: elantra automatic trans problems

Does the Check Engine light come ON when this happens? Whenever the "Check Engine" light comes on, there is always a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) stored in the ECM (Engine Control Module). You'll need an OBDII (On-Board-Diagnostics) scanner to retrieve any codes recorded/set in ECM. Once you do this and let us know what, if any codes are set, then we can go from there.

SOURCE: Idle is high when in park or neutral, comes down when in gear

Hi Shelly,

The idle is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module via the throttle speed actuator. High idle can be caused by a malfunction in the idle speed system or it can be caused by a vacuum leak that is allowing the engine get air that it is not supposed to be getting.

The best way to diagnose this problem would be to FIRST scan your computer network in your vehicle and collect any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) thay may be present. There is a good chance that there will be a DTC stored that will lead you directly to the source of your problem.

If there are no DTCs present, then some manual testing, using a scan tool to excercise the throttle actuator will be necessary to help determine the cause.

When starting off driving and changing from first to second gear if I take the revs high, the revs stay high and don't come down quick enough making the gear change very jerky.

Try idle air controller , possibly m.a.p censor. , best to go to auto zone or similar have codes read and go from there .

Could, but sometimes solenoids cause this. Could also be the valve body. Most transmission shops will tell you a rebuild. Ask friends and associates first for a shop they trust. You could find an honest garage. I worked at shops, not long though, that I told the owners not to let the customer talk to me, because I would not lie for them. Driving habits and how long people drive the bad symptoms, result in total rebuilds.

Engine revs up down while in idle

If its been without the line for over a year, I Highly doubt it. Look into IAC valve. Most are installed with 2 screws, easy to adjust. Idle Air Control Valve. Look that up, for a start.

Engine revs is too high when in neutral gear

First thing check for engine control module fault codes, if you have a lean running code then you have a vacuum leak on the engine, this allows air to bypass the idle speed control system and raises the idle up. Another issue is a sticking Idle speed control air bypass valve, but that is not common and vacuum leaks are.

Without getting into transmission diagnostics that would require special tools, you can check the transmission fluid level. You could also drain and replace the trans fluid to see if this solves the problem. Changing the fluid is considered regular maintence, and will not hurt a thing. The trans will benifit from fresh fluids in the long run also.
