Hi,this could be your maf sensor, just so you can alliminate, when you start the car wait untill it starts spluttering then stop the car open the bonnet and look at ware the air intake is,in part of the pipe that leads from the air filter box you will see a plug with a wire line connected to it pull the plug of and see if the car starts,if it starts it is the maf sensor(replace),If it is that the car will drive not verry well but this is not advicerble.
all the best,hope this helped

Hi,
The early 300 SL suffered from dodgy HT leads and spark plugs if not regularly maintained, the problem with Mercedes Benz though is that the cars have so many features that it is almost impossible to diagnose without seeing the car. Some things to try (in this order) are : - Spark plugs, Ht leads, remove and clean Distributer Cap, replacement of HFM sensor (common fault), if none of these help then faults have been known in throttle valves and fuel pumps/filters
Happy fault finding

More than likely missing (Misfire) they are prone to engine wiring harness going brittle and causing a misfire
SOURCE: won't start, replaced starter and still won't start
could be flooded or clogged fuel injecters

By having it scanned and cleared with an OBD tool. This light comes on when it detects a problem. Could be a bad gas cap, or it could be a misfiring engine. The code you get from having it scanned will pinpoint the trouble area
