Transmission will not shift out second

I purchased the truck a few months ago it has been sitting to cold do do any work outside. Any way it also was sitting for a year when I purchased. It will start and move but only in second gear. I was told the 2500 series had the 4l80e transmission but not sure. Also the 502 motoe was installed a couple years ago. What possible problems could it be. Thanks

Yes the 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD (with or without 4wd) came with a 4L80E transmission. If the truck moved and drove fine before you stored it. Your repair may be minor but you will need to inspect some components. You need to check as much wiring as you can. Look for a nest. When vehicles sit for a while animals (mice) can move in and wreak it. The problem is in the valve body. The shift solenoid (1-2) is either jammed, defective, has defective wiring going to it, or the PCM is not working correctly. Is the engine light on during this failure? If so, has anyone retreived the codes? Please write back if you have more questions but be detailed, as best as you can, good luck.

SOURCE: 2001 Yukon XL SLT 4 speed Auto Transmission shift problem!

Sam,

I would start with a transmission fliud and filter service.

I would then have the trasnmission checked out by a transmission shop. The transmission most of the time has the direct drum band is starting to go. The shops can rebuild it no problem, This is a very common failure wiith the trasnmission.

Good Luck

SOURCE: 1996 gmc suburban transmission shift problem

96 gm trucks had a proble with third gear burning out because of a ground issue from pcm..there was a bulletin for adding a new ground for third gear control circuit...aftermarket trans shops do not remember this problem and it is often overlooked..take to local dealership and you should be able to get problem resolved

Check for a possible cold start injector problem or a possible motor or transmission mount that is loose or broken.

Mariner wont shift out of first

You just changed the fluid as few months ago

Why would it be low?

Low fluid level may have caused it to slip & ruin
the clutch discs

You may have bad trans solenoids or other shift
strategy sensors that need to be diagnosed

If you had the wrong fluid put in your have possible
problems

Need a shop to spend some time with it,explain all
that has been done, why, how, etc & make sure you
drive on a road test & take a mechanic along

I own a 2003 Mazda MPV. I have owed the van for 2 years when first purchased after a few months I started to notice a faint noise from the back of the car when I when shift from 1-2 gear. Well I brought it...

Most transmission shifter ( where you shift) has a linkage control to shift gears in the transmission. Those joints from the linkage have bushings made of rubber. Once these rubbers were worn down and torn, the noise from metal friction from linkage can give you that intermittent noise. When the gap from the linkage joint enlarges in lieu of the bushing space, it causing the engagement of shifting is off from original position that was why you are experiencing "binding in other gears"
Have a different shop to check out these linkage control bushings and replace them. The bushings are cheap and it probably takes about 2 hours the most to replace them. This will save you a lot of money on spending on unnecessary repair. Good Luck.

My 1997 ford taurus transmission slips when it shifts to second

this is caused by a piston in the transmission that has a crack in it once it warms up the crack seals and operates normally.being cold the crack opens up allowing fluid to flow past it. take to trans shop as soon as you can, will be minimum repair if it has not caused further damage in the transmission.

The warmer the engine gets, the harder the truck is to shift!

replace the fluid in clutch resaviour ALL of it
ILL bet the fluid is dark and not clear you got moisture in the fluid

water expands much more than hydraulic fluid to hot temps
making less "room" for piston travel in clutch slave

I am having problems with my ford focus 2001 with 121,000 I had the transmission filter changed a week ago and the system flushed. But it still seems to be having problems shifting from 1st to 2nd gear...

It very well could be a faulty shift sensor, ford is bad about putting these sensors internally on the transmission. I would reccommend taking it to a shop with the proper computer so they can go into the vehicle's computer and test the shift solonoid in the transmission. If that is working probably, the clutch between first and second gear could be getting a little wore out, once it heats up it swells up and could be acting properly then.
