When I get into the car and try depressing the brake, it's very stiff, like it's locked; therefore, start button will not engage to start car, only accessories will come on. Thank you.
Have the brake master cylinder replace d as it is not moving the piston and allowing the hydraulic pressure to build up enough to allow the switch to operate and allow the car to start.

If your car has power brakes, a slight hissing noise when depressing the brake pedal is not unusual. However, if you are having issues with the brake pedal felling stiff or hard, then you may have a vacuum leak in the power brake booster. If that is the case, it must be replaced.
Hi Beth usually when shifter is stuck there is a locking mechanism and keeps shifter from engaging unless brake is depressed to release the lock. If you hear a clicking sound when pedal is depressed then switch is probably ok and its probably the steering wheel lock. First try with your spare key to start the vehicle(old key may be worn ). If that doesn't do it then try with WD 40 a very little in ignition key hole or on the key work it slowly and see what happens. If none of these suggestions work its probably the steering wheel lock and that requires surgery. Keep me post best of luck
The button/switch is what should be adjusted not the lever. it might unscrew to move it closer or have a locking mechanism to move it outward, the lever should press the button about 80% down at rest
If the brake sensor at the pedal brake is malfunctioning, or the cable became unattached, the car will "think" you are not depressing the pedal, and therefore, will not allow you to shift it out of park. One way you can tell if this switch is working, is by looking (from inside the vehicle) at the reflection of the 3rd stop light on the rear glass. If you cant see the light working, then you can be sure that the brake pedal switch is the culprit.
Somtimes you need to turn the steering wheel a little to allow the lock to engage.
Try depress the unlock button while moving the steering back and forth a little. Try a lot..
If not work, drape a scarf or towel over steering column to hide key in ignition, and use spare key to open door lock. You do have spare key?
Check your insurance, you may have lock smith lock out coverage.
Good luck.
the most common fix is either the brake pedal switch is bad or out of adjustment. cars now days, you have to step on brake to start car, it is a safety feature so it can not start or go into gear if foot is not on brake. once the brake switch is locked, it will send current to the shift solinoid that releases the shift lock.usually its the brake switch ! have a good day !!
