You might just need a fan bellt or serpentine belt, get an empty spray bottle mix a small amount of
dish soap and water, spray on belt, then start your engine if the noise stops just replace your belt.,
if it does'nt it could be another pulley or the tensioner pulley, then i would suggest removing the belt
and spin each pulley to determine which one is making the noise. if it turns out to be the alternator, you
will have to replace the whole thing. they don't normally sell just the pulley, and even if you can get one
requires special equipment to pull it off, if needed just replace it and save yourself time and trouble.
plus parts normally come with some kind of warranty. good luck!
I would start with a can or brake clean and spray some of that on your belt as it is turning and see if there is some dirt on the belt making it squeal.
It can be a week tensioner. You can look with a flashlight as the belt is turning to see if you see the tension pulley is popping up and loosing tension.
While there with the flashlight make sure the belt is running strait.
A couple ways to know if the compressor is bad. First you will hear it squeal real bad or grind real bad ans you run the AC. This is an indicator of the bearings gone bad. You can also remove the belt and just give the compressor pulley a few spins. It should spin free with no hang ups or noises.
I would suggest that while the belt is off you spin all the pulleys to see if they spin free without any noises. Naturally the crank won't spin by hand but all the others should.
Also keep in mind that on rare occasions even a new belt can be bad and another new one will be needed.
Maybe, you would have to remove the belts and then take a look at all the pulleys, it could be a pulley or a bad waterpump, or even something in the timing belt, like a timing belt pulley or tensioner pulley or waterpump, the best way to find out is to remove all the belts and then start the motor and listen for the noise, if the noise is still there with the belts removed then its something in the timing belt, but is the noise goes away then its something with the belts a pulley or a alternator, you would have to inspect all pulley and the acc, hope this helps,
Each pulley is has a bearing. The best way to check it is to remove the belt and spin each pulley, (except the crank pulley wont spin) and listen to each one normally a tensioner pulley or idler pulley is the problem. Note: not all pulley will turn with the exact freeness in feeling, for instance it will be harder to turn the power steering pulley than it will to turn the ideler pulley but just listen to the noise. If you got a bad one it will sound like grinding rocks. Good luck.
One of the belt pulleys likely has a bad bearing. watch the pulleys for binding while it's running or remove the belt and check each pulley by hand. AC puts more strain on the belt...if the belt is not new and pulleys check out, (and tensioner is working properly) change the belt.
Don't know if this helps. Had squeel in belt area. Occasionally engine would stop when squeel got loud and sometimes engine would try to quit while going at various speeds. Found tensioner pulley was bad and changed it. Still squeeled and engine would stop when squeel got loud. This time while sitting in yard. Further checking found binding in power steering pump. Will be putting on new one tomorrow. Hope it works. Will update.
