About a year ago we replaced the fuel pump in my 2002 Chevy Malibu and that same day my check engine light came on and has been on every since. Autozone gave me codes p0302 and p0420. What should we check first. Also I never really lost power although it would chug from time to time
The p0302 is a misfiring code. It could be plugs or coil pack. The p0420 code reads Catalyst System Efficiency Below Treshol. I would start with the plugs that is the cheapest route to start out with.

Most probably and if a cat is not flowing proper is causes back preasure that can result in sticking or burned vavles, mechanic not nice by saying ignore the cat effiency code p0420.Can ussually have cat replaced at aftermarket muffler shop for approx. $200 cheaper than valve job or excessive fuel that you have used and damage that may occur to your engine.

there is a large evaporative leak. keep away form ottozoo, they dont have the brain power to actually diagnose a light bulb., their job is to sell parts., if they sell you the wrong parts tough.Take it to a qualified repair shop that does a lot of GM work or the dealer.

Need to replace the sensor inside the gas tank. I have a 2008 Malibu with the same problem. It was a faulty fuel gauge sensor.
