Now you need a wiring diagram & work your way back on all
of the ALDL Pins or wires, to see if their good end to end

Then you need to see what data some of them are supposed
to have at the connector.

21 years -- most likely some corrosion in the wiring, where somewhat exposed to the road, engine bay, etc

The ses light, idle,& such are another issue to work on.

I think the codes, if any, are less help than component testing
the vehicle sensors & wiring

The OBD1 Systems had common sensor wiring or grounds shared,
so grounds & failed sensors can effect other sensors & send
you all sorts of places, rather than walking down every wire with
a wiring diagram to see what's what

so i checked wires and went to ecm and unplugged and checked every pin and even took apart and checked connection on prom and all. everything looks clean and fine put all back together and tried to check codes again and see what truck would do. well no flashing light yet but i jumped terminals now and it flashed but it looked like more of continous flash not sure if paused but was running better and noticed when grounded the b pin on dlc like should the idle would change seem to get worse its wierd

SOURCE: obd 2 connector does not work with any code scanner

HI there....Check to see if the code reader is a CAN OBD 2 code reader. If it is only OBD2 , that may be the problem. In 2003 Some vehicle manufacturers ( ford,Gm,Mazda and Saab) began using a new computer protocol called Controller Area Network (CAN) with the OBD2 and if your vehicle is CAN OBD 2 the simple OBD2 code reader will not work.Contact your local dealer to determine if you vehicle is CAN or not or find a code reader that is CAN OBD2 capable. Hope this helps you out

SOURCE: 91 S10 rough idle, stalling ALDL problems

Make sure there is no vacuum leaks.

Vacuum leak at intake manifold and vacuum hose.

Bad Idle Air Control Motor (IAC)

Low compression (170 psi + is OK)

Start cleaning and repair these trouble spots and see is there any improvement.

====

For more advance DIY'er then you may try this.

Use a can of Berryman carburetor clean to locate the vacuum leak.

SEE SAMPLE PICTURE HERE

This is a 20-30 minutes job.

Vacuum leaks can occur in following locations.

Intake manifold AND/OR vacuum lines.

Intake manifold is not accessible unless the engine head if off.

You can still check the potential leak by spraying some Berryman near the intake manifold.

Listen for rpm increase after you introduce the Berryman (FUEL) at idle.

Do the same starting from the brake booster unit (the round unit) on the drive side fire all.

Carefully listen for increase of RPM right after to spray the Berryman to the potential vacuum spot.

Get a friend to HEAR the RPM increase or monitor for RPM on the tech.

DO NOT AIM the Berryman into any heat source.

SOURCE: WHY CAN'T I GET ANY CODES ON MY 1994 3.4 CAMARO

The only way those type of scanners will give you a code is if it is a hard code. When a check engine light is on, but doen's flash it is usually referring to an emission problem. A flashing light refers to misfire. Spark plugs, wire, etc. A snap on scanner or Genesis Scanner is able to look at perimeters inside the system which is a better approach when you don't have a hard code. Sometimes after the code is on long enough it will become a hard code and the type of scanner that you have will pull it. The thing that often happens is the EGR isn't circulating properly and you get an intermediate light and don't get a hard code for a while which leaves you in the dark. You might take your vehicle to a local service shop which uses a better scanner and they can look at what is going on and solve that problem.

Whatever else would make a service engine soon light illuminate on a 1989 Odsmobile 98 Regency with the 3800 engine.?

The ses lite needs voltage and ground. Voltage goes hot when you turn the key on. The computer controls the ground circuit. I can't rule out, your instrument cluster may have a problem? The ground circuit could be shorted to ground before it reaches the computer. Or the computer has a problem? Just my opinion.

Ran it out of gas, now runs fine cold, as soon as its warm starts hard, and stalls when put in drive

Is the \'Service Engine Soon\' light on? Only from what you described, it sounds like the engine\'s running in \'open loop\' (fast idle, cold) okay, then when it\'s supposed to go into \'closed loop\', you have a malfunction. Checking the trouble codes will pinpoint the problem; your truck is pre-\'95 so it\'s the older OBD-I and you could get the trouble codes by grounding the proper terminal in the ALDL, counting the blinks of the SES light and using it to determine what electronic control device is malfunctioning. If no SES light/trouble codes and since you ran out of gas (?), it might be time to replace the fuel filter and possibly check the fuel pressure and/or fuel pump.

Code reader does not work

with a test light test the ALDL plug for battery power the pin right next to it willl be ground. ( hook the test light to power and a ground will light the light) the check engine light should come on and if you crossthe upper two pins in the aldl the check engine light should flash out the codes. The code reader might not be working and may need to hook it to a different car and see if it reads a different car.

Transmission , idle, check engine

My 1st suggestion would be to get a scan done for the check engine light. I'm not talking about a simple 'code reader' but an actual scan tool so all of the different sensors and perimeters can be read. You will need to get one or find someone with a scan tool which can do OBD I vehicles.

If the engine isn't running correctly this could cause the transmission not wanting to shift. 2 vehicles that come to mind where I've seen this happen.

One was a Pontiac and it wouldn't shift into overdrive. Problem was the thermostat which was stuck open and it wouldn't allow the engine to get up to proper temperature which kept the transmission from shifting.

The other was a Ford Explorer that the lady thought for sure the transmission was bad. After a test drive and investigation it was found the catalytic converter was mostly plugged which wouldn't allow the engine to achieve the proper torque and RPMs to get the transmission to shift.

Now granted neither of these examples are an exact duplicate of the problems you are having. They are simply to illustrate that engine performance (or the lack of) CAN affect the way the transmission shifts.

Hope this helps.

99 Saturn SC1 ''Service engine soon'' light is on.

Did you get the code that triggered the SEL? If you know that, it will be easier to diagnose your problem. You can do it without a tool on the old saturns. Just need a paperclip. :

Use a paper clip to jumper Terminal A and B of the ALDL *Assembly Line Diagnostic Link* which is above your left knee.
Terminal A is an interal ground and is the top right terminal in the connector. Terminal B is directly adjacent and to the left of Terminal A.

Turn the ignition to ON.

All codes are 2 digits between 11 and 99. Codes are displayed on the SES light by flashing the light with short and long pauses to distinguish digits of one code from digits of another. The short pause is used between digits of the same code, long pauses are between codes. Also, each code is flashed three times before going to the next code.

For example, the sequence of code 12 will be: flash, pause, flash-flash, long pause, then repeat 2 times. If Code 12 is not displayed, the self-diagnostic pogram i snot functioning properly.

If only Code 12 is displayed, no system malfunctions have been stored.

Any existing system fault codes are displayed in order from low to high, except for Code 11.

On vehicles with an automatic transaxle and on which exist stored transaxle codes, Code 11 will be displayed last, then the SHIFT TO D2 light will begin flashing transaxle codes of flags.

When all engine codes have been displayed, Code 12 will flash again.
