I have a 1996 buick regal with the 3.8 engine. My problem is after running the car and the engine is warm (normal) and I shut the car down, if I start the car in 15 or 20 minutes the car starts fine. If I wait 30 ro 40 minutes the car will not start. It turns over easily and seems like it is starving for fuel. I pop the hood and wait about 15 or 20 minutes it starts right up and runs fine. I drove 900 miles with not problems as long as I didn't leave it sit for more than 20 minute or so. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance..

Sounds like the fuel pressure regulator. if you have access to a pressure guage check the pressure when it will not start.

I'd suggest the ignition control module, however I'd have a certified mechanic check it out just in case...

SOURCE: 92 buick lesabre: yesterday, it would not start when it was hot.

Crank sensor. Next time it does this spray some water on it and see if it cranks. Its by the crankshaft pulley towards front of car.

I have a 94 Buick 3.8L car, it idles to fast. When you do a cold start and put it in gear, it will not idle down to normal. It will idle about 2000-2500 rpm. You can shut off the engine and restart it and...

It sounds like your idle control valve is sticking. The video shows you where they are located on a 97 Buick but it is the same engine.
This video shows you how to replace them.

Hi,
You need to get your engine coolant thermistor checked and tested. This is what tells the ECM when the engine temperature is at normal working temperature and turns the idle down.
But when the idle won't come down from cold to warm this is usually the main fault.
Hope this helps.
Thanks

'96 buick regal- heater not producing warmth. fan blows fine and i did check passenger temp contol(set all the way warm) with no results. next best check???

Check the temp of the heater hoses going into the heater from the engine in the engine compartment.
If you have a temp gauge on the dash does it go at least 1/3 the way up the gauge from cold in normal driving.
You can take a garden hose and flush the heater....both ways back and forth then reconnect heater hoses and check for heat.
But.....The # 1 cause of no or low heat is the engine thermostat.
It needs to close tightly to force the engine coolant through the small heater core.

98 Buick Regal -engine quits

ok its one of two things you need to check when it cuts off if you have spark or fuel if you lose fuel pressure replace pump it gets hot and makes noise like its running but its not pumping fuel and if you lose spark you need to replace ignition control module has a hair line crack in it and when gets hot the crack expands and loses contact and wala no spark

1996 buick regal knocking noise

The intake may be leaking coolant into the crankcase. This can cause the lifter to bleed down also.

Had the same problem drove me nuts until I tried disconnecting Mass Air Flow Sensor, the car should drive normally but with a "Service Engine Soon Light" on. Mass air flow can run from $140 up, picked one up at recycler for $40.

Worth a try.
