I had the same problem a month ago. my van would not start at all. I replaced the starter and ignition switch and still does the same thing, but when I replaced the neutral safety switch,it has been working ever since. Try replacing the neutral safety switch. it's located underneatht the battery. I paid almost $70 dollars from the dealer.
The most likely cause is a bad neutral safety switch. It should be on top of the transmission. Follow the shifter cable through the firewall and the switch will be near the end of the cable

ALLData.com probably has the best info for your MPV. I use it for my 2000 MPV and it hasn't failed me yet. Mazda wants $250 for a shop manual and Haynes hasn't written one as of yet. My MPV right now won't come out of 2nd gear because of (I'm hoping) a bad PRNDL Range Select Switch.
Yes, that was too much. The neutral safety switch costs around $70 (if I remembered right). I bought it from my Mazda dealer and asked them for a diagram to locate it. In most cases, my Mazda dealer has been helpful in provide diagrams for this minivan. The switch is located underneath the battery (you'll have to remove it) on the transmission. Make sure it is aligned right when you replace the switch; otherwise it won't find neutral, and you'll have to use the bypass switch on top of the steering column to start you engine.
