The overheated wires smell is worrying and the ECM is in that location . You probably have burnt connector pins or a damaged board. That could cause the 5 volt reference issues. You need an auto electrician.
Take it to a key cutter with appropriate software to mate it to your spare key
As a second note keep your key bunch light on 2008 sprinter or you'll break the esr ring
