Key in ignition stucked

JIMMY 1998 : I opened the door and realized the power is out - battery died somehow in two days. I put the key in ignition, tried to start and nothing. Then I tried to remove the key and won't return to the position to be removed. The car is in the street with the key in and door unlocked - as I only have one key (my daughter's first car bought 2 months ago). Please help. Be blessed!

Battery died somehow in two days - More then likely your vehicle has what is call a parasitic drain on the electrical system (battery) . Something is not turning off when it is suppose to . The key will not come out because of lack of battery power . Safety system-won't let the key be turned all the way off an removed again because of no power . You have to get it jump started an get it off the street . Then check out vides on youtube on find parasitic draw .

SOURCE: can't remove key from ignition 2001 gmc jimmy

I dont know how much help this will be, but I'll offer it and let you be the judge.

Ive had this issue before in a different GM vehicle, a Pontiac Grand Prix. The issue turned out to be that the voltage from the battery was low due to corroded terminals. Once that was cleaned up and the voltage restored to normal, the key came out. Come to find out that this was a common issue in that vehicle, voltage goes low, you cant remove the key.

Now, on my vehicle and since yours is a GM product as well I will assume it will hold true for your vehicle too, there is a small hole on the bottom side of the column right in the area of where the ignition key cylinder is. If you have this, you can take a small tool like an allen wrench and push it up in there and that will press on a release mechanism that should allow you to turn the key back to its release position and pull the key out.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: (1997 GMC Jimmy) Battery will randomly go dead

I would check for a draw. You can do this by disconnecting the negative cable from the battery and hooking a test light from the cable to the battery. The light will be on if something is taking power off of the battery such as, dome light, glove box light, radio ect. make sure to have doors shut and everything off when you do this so it wont give you a false reading. If the light is on, you have a draw. if it is off you dont have a draw. Then from there you can figure out where the draw is coming from by opening the drivers door and accessing the fuse panel(OPENING THE DOOR WILL KEEP THE LIGHT ON BECAUSE IT WILL OPEN TH ECIRCUIT FOR THE DOME LIGHT, YOU CAN TAPE OR HOLD THE SWTICH INSIDE THE DOOR JAMB TO CLOSE THE CIRCUIT)when you access the fuse panel you can pull each fuse 1 at a time until the light goes off, when the light goes off. check what the fuse is for, that is where your draw is coming from. Common draws come from a faulty radio or glove box light stays on.

Look for the inline fuse link in the red wire from the battery . It looks like something was spliced into the wire. It's the fuselink.

My battery died. After trying to start my car the key is now stuck in ignition, shifter stuck in park, no brake lights. I charged the battery and only get the cluster lights.

Hi there all the things you explain are and need power to operate, make sure your battery has 12.6 volts or more and try again , if your battery doesn't have that voltage then you will need a new battery, hope this helps

New battery In mercedes no power

I'm not a car mechanic, but, it sounds like you might want to check the fuse to the ignition switch, and, if that fails, it might be a problem with the Start Safety Switch on the transmission. Good luck.

Dome light and key in ignition tone won't quit.

Yes, I would lean toward a stuck drivers door latch. Your door open switch is located in the latch itself and the ding is a reminder your key is in the ignition so you don't lock them in the vehicle when you lock the door. even though your door is shut, the truck still thinks it is open. sometimes spraying the latch with some WD-40 will get it freed up and working again, but a new latch might be in your future.

Put in a new battery and vehicle tries to start without the key in the ignition...

Usually means the starter solenoid is stuck. Could also be a short in the key switch.

The key being stuck is a physical problem and not a result of the battery going dead, [ but may be the other way arround ]. You can try to lube the lock cylinder with a quick shot of WD40 to get it operating , but chances are that it will have to be replaced anyway.
