Just brought a citreon relay 2006 and it has black smoke coming from exhaust when accelerate. It has had a new head gasket and timing belt and water pump. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Black smoke is an indication of too much fuel-running rich-in the cylinders. The air/fuel mixture is way off-too much fuel. Possible causes are cylinder misfires (runs and idles rough, a noticeable miss), leaking fuel injectors, or a failed fuel pressure regulator.
Take off the vacuum line to the regulator (on the fuel rail?)-if there is evidence of gas in the vacuum line, the regulator has failed and excess gas is being sucked into the engine through the vacuum line.
You should take a fuel pressure reading to check pressure against the specification for your car.
Also possible that the fuel metering is correct, but the air being supplied to the cylinders is lacking. A clogged air filter could cause that, but you would also experience a rough running condition. Since you didn't mention that, I would think the fuel metering is wrong-too much gas.

i think the answer could lie in something which you have not already mentioned. the sender unit usually located on the radiator itself is prone to going and should be replaced when replacing anyt major parts of the rad. if the temperature is still very high even when it should be running cool then yu should maybe look for head gasket leaks which may not be apparent from the outside but an average mechanic should be able to cehck this with a small device. and this should be very cheap unless its gone and then i woulddebate the cost of the car to the cost of maintaining the engine.
