Steve,
You need to replace your fans sensor switch or make sure you don't have any wires that may have been worn through. You can test your fan by hooking a direct 12v currant to it to make sure it works. The fan can go bad, but I usually find that the switch just stops working.

Testimonial: "Alex, a you talking about the ECT sensor loated underneath the thermostat?? The fan is good, so is the relay."

  • Alex Webster
    Alex Webster Apr 18, 2014

Yes exactly. ON Volvo it both tells the car the temp and controls the fan.

Your thermostat needs to be checked. Your heater core not functioning will cause other problems, but not what you describe. I betcha it is the thermostat. Get that checked before you go into critical overheat, which can warp or puncture your head gasket, and or freeze your engine. Your idiot light going off when your car overheats?

Testimonial: "No idiot light. Car doesn't actually "overheat" persay. The gauge goes up to about the 3 o'clock position.I do know that The fan DOES NOT come on when the A/C is on though. Replaced Fan Relay, no help."

  • Mary Piscitelli Apr 17, 2014

yeah, get the thermostat replaced. The fan should come on by itself. Do you have any codes that have popped up?

SOURCE: Replace Heater Core for Volvo S70 (1999)

It is your heater core. I fixed mine for $144. Ordered the new part on Ebay and followed these instructions http://www.volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=9717 It was very simple, I'm a middle age grandmother! The hardest part was cleaning up all the antifreeze. You will need a shopvac, a small one is $20 at WalMart.

SOURCE: Car Heater smells strange

from he Popular Mechanics site if the smell in your car is like maple syrup:

(1) SMELLS LIKE: MAPLE SYRUP
WHEN: After the engine has warmed or possibly even after it's shut off for a few minutes.
THE CULPRIT: Coolant containing sweet-smelling (but toxic) ethylene glycol is leaking from somewhere. It could be coming from a radiator or heater hose, a failed intake manifold gasket or cylinder head. It might be coming from a leaky radiator cap or the radiator itself, especially if you smell it outside the car. A strong odor inside the passenger compartment probably means a bad heater core.

I noticed my temperature gauge low for longer periods of time in the cold. I just had my radiator replaced about 4 months ago. The coolant level is good and so far no leaks. 1999 Volvo S70.

That's not a problem as far as its not overheating. and if the radiator is bad or there was a leak then the car will be high not low. and i think your your Thermostat is open all the time that's maybe why the car is always Low on Temperature.

Hey, i have a problem with a 1998 Volvo V70 diesel.Car can't blow hot air , and at the winter is getting really cold inside. What i'm sure about is that my thermostat is ok. My radiator is ok, liquid ok, ...

Did you recently do any cooling system work? The cooling system is pressurized and in your case it might have air in it. There is a bleed screw for the system, but I do not know where it is. But, let the engine warm up to the half way mark on the instrument cluster. Then try squeezing the upper and lower radiator hoses a few times. Does not have to be simultaneously. Wear gloves because the radiator hoses will be hot. Also be careful, not to come in contact with the fan, as this could cause serious bodily injury.

Cooling fan staying on for long periods, running battery flat

There are 2 possible cause for that over working RAD FAN!
  • Check ur temperature switch that might be shorted already or the connector wire have fuse each other that makes the continuity of running the fan.
  • Check the relay, that might have stuck the contactors together and gives power to the FAN!

Check that or u could bring ur car to the nearest garage to assess the situation!
