Check your transmission fluid level and top off with approved fluid as needed. Do not over fill.

The fluid should have an oily smell and feel. It should be pinkish - red in color. Dark or brown fluid - or fluid that smells burnt is an indication of neglect. You *may* be able to solve this with a flush / refill of the fluid - but no one will guarantee it.

Good luck!

REVERSE OK!
drive, and Low dead. (hot and cold engine????)
so does it slip.?
slip means, you step on the gas and RPM races but car dont move. SLIPs. that is transmission
but of it dont slip that means the engine is weak..
if its slip?, check levels first.
if levels in box are ok (dont guess read how to )
then check shift linkage.
if that is ok, scan the PCM for tranny errors DTC.
if that is ok, do the FSM stated, line pressure tests..

2000 audi a8 4.2 slip in reverse when the car is hot,if cold no problem

Hi
If you have a Auto g/box the problem could be either reverse pump or reverse band.
If you have a manual g/box then its the clutch slipping and the only thing with that is oil on plate.
But it has been known on other type cars was the rear brakes sticking on when hot in reverse.

assuming fluid is in the hot marks and you have changed it often. reverse failure used to be the first sign that the trans is toast. " reverse is the first to go" was the motto back in the day. is it original trans? what is that 34 years old? its time for a rebuild.... even if its the second rebuild, its time

The transmission does engage in reverse when the

have it check by a scanner to see it the problem is connected to the electronic transmission control or solinoid controls, if no faullt is found, try checking the shift control cable for any obstruction, if everything is ok then the problem is with your reverse clutch pack its probably slipping....

Tranny

check the fluid level hot, if it is low top it off, if it is not low you will need to replace the reverse clutch pack, this involves overhaul of the transmission Assembly
