On the way to work this morning hazard lights randomly flashed about 4 times in the space of 5 ks,thought it might have something to do with an electrics fault or is this a subie warning of some type(1997 ej20k WRX sedan-manual)?

May be a problem with the flasher relay, easy to change out and inexpensive, if not that then will need the wiring etc checked through

Something is VERY wrong. Hazard lights should only flash when you press the hazard lights button. Some vehicles, I think the upper brake light in the back window flashes? Get someone to press the brake while you are watching the back and then the front.

The turn and hazard litses share the same flasher, I would check the the lights by turning on the hazards then walk around the car checking that each light flashes the same brightness, do the same thing using the turn signals if a light is dim or not flashing the switch or the wire between the switch and the lamp is bad. I think the turn signal and hazard light have different fuses. I believe the brake and hazard light have the same fuse. Does your brake light seem to work. First thing to check fuses and bulbs. This is my thought at the present time.

Maybe you need a new battery

Did you have it tested

Do you know how old it is
or how many times it went flat

Disconnect the Battery and Charge it as a STAND ALONE CHARGE (not connected to the car), You may have a bad ECU.

from what i know the 5-2 flash has to do with the clock spring. Any issues with the airbag system need to be looked at. When the light flashes there is a short, and that could cause an issue with random airbags going off or them not going off when you need them. Another sign of the clockspring going bad is the horn either not working or randomly not working. If you dont know what your doing have a shop handle it.

You need to program it. Here is how you doit.
Step by step:

1- get inside and lock all door with the "power dool lock switch"
2- insert the key into the ignition 6 times "IN and OUT" nice and steady until your hazards flash on dashboard. You can just keep inserting the key until you see the hazards flash, but 6 times should do it / get you into the program mode.
3-once the hazards flash, turn the key to ACC position (dash light up, but car is not running)
4-press any button on the remote (hazards should flash)
5-turn key OFF
6-remove key
7-unlock door with "power door lock switch"
8-open door DONE.

I have the same problem, just started on a 2nd date last night. Wow, was that embarassing! Blinkers don't work. Hazards do work. Airbag light is On. Windows don't work. Radio is fine. Heater fan does Not work. Rear defrost button beeps but does not light up. I think it has something to do with the BCM. I have to go out of town for a funeral but will trace the wiring diagram when I get back and hopefully post a solution.
Really glad I found this site, thought the deceased's ghost invaded my car ;)
