Installation of a trailer brake in my dodge durango

I purchased this vehicle for the sole purpose of pulling a travel trailer and relayed this intention when we made the purchase. My research revealed that the car could pull 6200 lbs. I purchased a trailer of about 4000 lbs, and have discovered after the RV center failed to be successful in installing a trailer break that this vehicle's computer system will not allow the breaking system. This is nor to be believed. How can a manufacturer advertise this pulling power but will not accept a trailer breaking mechanism. I have a new trailer that was delivered yesterday but do not have the means to pull it. Any help will be truly appreciated

SOURCE: 2000 dodge ram headlights not working

Try this, take the steering colum cover off. Check the back of the multi function switch. Likely the ground wire is broke at the connector. I believe the ground wire is the second wire rom the top on the second row of wires. Unfortunately, the connector plugs inside the plastic houseing break and pull out. The fix isnt easy. You can either replace the entire wireing harness, or splice in some extra wire to take the strain off the plug. Good Luck

If this is a factory light harness for the trailer hookup on your Caravan. Look under the hood for a fuse box. Many 2000+ vehicles have this with separate fuses just for the trailer lights.

Why is Prodigy P2 is flashing 00 and .c?

If your Prodigy P2 brake controller is flashing 00 and .c, it could indicate an error with the brake controller's connection to the trailer or the brake controller itself. Here are a few things to check:
  1. Verify Connection: Check that the brake controller is properly connected to the trailer's electrical system. Make sure the trailer plug is firmly seated in the brake controller and the tow vehicle's connector. Ensure the pins and sockets are clean and free of corrosion.
  2. Check Brake Controller Settings: Verify that the brake controller is properly set up for your specific trailer's weight and braking system. Refer to the brake controller manual for the recommended settings.
  3. Check Trailer Brakes: Verify that the trailer's braking system is functioning properly. Check the brake drums and shoes for wear and damage, and make sure the brake adjustment is correct.
  4. Check Wiring and Fuses: Check all wiring connections between the brake controller and the trailer, as well as the tow vehicle's wiring and fuses. Make sure all wiring connections are tight and secure, and that all fuses are intact.
If you have checked these items and are still experiencing issues, it may be necessary to take your vehicle and trailer to a certified mechanic or dealership for further diagnosis and repair. The hot brake smell from the car brakes could indicate that the trailer brakes are not functioning correctly and that the tow vehicle's brakes are doing most of the work, which can lead to overheating and brake fade.

Finding rite hitch

just make sure capacity (shouldnt be a problem with your trailer) and height are correct for your trailer. Check out Harbor Freight for inexpensive solutions.

I only have the 3rd brake light working what is wrong with the outher ones

Does your Durango have a trailer hitch/receiver and trailer wiring harness? Is it original equipment or aftermarket? Has your Check Engine or Service Engine Soon light come on recently? If so, read the error code(s) stored in the onboard computer. You may have a physical wiring problem or a circuitry problem. I think your Durango has relays (fuse-protected) associated with your brake lights. Check our owner's manual for the location of these relays and verify that they are working properly. If so, start checking the trailer wiring harness.

How should I prepare my durango to pull a 24 foot travel trailer...what class of hitch, do I need in-board electric trailer brake controls, etc.?

Hi Frank,
I have a Durango 2000 and pull a 24 foot ski boot loaded with equipment. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't try towing anything without the trailer brakes connected. I purchased the Titan Trailer brakes setup and they've never failed me once. The hitch: just make sure you get the right towing capacity for your travel trailer. I have the 5.9 liter engine, which allows up to 6500 pounds of towing capacity. Your owners guide will explain how many based on engine size.
Good Luck, and happy traveling.

Trailer wiring problem. Tow vehicle is a 2008 Grand Caravan with 4 wire plug. Double checked, plug function works fine. When trailer is plugged to tow vehicle with tow vehicle lights OFF the trailer...

Most likely the brown wire from the trailer connector is connected to a constant battery voltage source, and it should be connected to the vehicle running light circuit, however someone might have wired the trailer connector up that way on purpose so that the trailer does not draw power from the vehicle running lights and possibly damage the vehicle running light circuit. (Dodge/Chrysler vehicles do have delicate lighting systems) Here are some images to help assist you, and the 4 way connector is the same as the 5 way connector just without the blue wire for the trailer brakes.
