Gas fumes inside cabin

Hello, My problem is that gasoline fumes enter the cabin when I am getting gasoline. Windows open or closed, doesn't matter. It happens when filling tank half-full or completely full. I live in the mountains at 2,000 feet elevation. The problem also happens when going up the mountain from sea level. Thank you for your help!

I think I answered my own question. I removed the bed liner under the rear window. Behind the bed liner are two cabin air exhaust ports. The little rubber flaps that allow air to escape the cabin but won't allow outside air to enter were warped of shape. In other words, the vent couldn't close. Air from the gas tank breather hose could leak into the cabin through the deformed vent flaps.

You may have a defective vapor recovery system or a loose hose coupling between the filler and the tank. The recovery system can go bad after a lot miles/time. Also, overfilling the tank (going beyond 'one click') can damage the system.
I would replace the gas cap first, make sure it is the right kind, before having the VR system checked.

SOURCE: I can't fill my tank up with gas on my 2004 Honda

Your problem is the breather on the tank
Its a pipe fitted to the tank that lets the air out when you put fuel in. and it sounds like its blocked up or has a kink in it
Find it ,clean it, and your ok to fill up.

SOURCE: When you fill the gas tank you can smell fumes but

There are, of course, many possibilities, but if you are smelling fumes it is likely that they are coming from the engine compartment. If you smell the fumes when you first start the car, it may be that one or more of your fuel injectors have begun to leak. They are the four cylindrical devices connected to the fuel rail down low in front of the cover that is marked PGM-FI. You would be able to see dampness on one or another if it is leaking. Another possibility is a leak in the fuel line itself regarding its several connections. Without a manual and pics, it is difficult to indicate the positions of many parts, but if you trace your fuel line backward from your fuel rail to the fuel filter and so on, you might be able to find a leak. A VERY small amount of fuel will allow you to smell it, so I wouldn't expect to see gas flowing out somewhere. Sometimes, simple overflow from filling the tank will give you a short-term odor.
Sorry I can't be more help. A Haynes manual would be a good investment.

SOURCE: 1997 Honda Civic EX: Exhaust fumes coming inside

hi, this might help you:

at first make sure your air system is set to take the inside air of the car. this is the button with the car on it with above this little car a circular arrow like as if air circulates only within the car, or like the air from the outside wont circulate inside the car.

if not:

if possible get a expert to do a check up of the body/chassis, it might be in a condition where rust has made wholes in eg a part under your seat.

it might also be that something is wrong with the ventilation part of your honda, like 'tubes' are leaking within the engine bay or??? something like that.

ive had a honda, not this problem, but i think it'll be something with the isolation and or the plates between the chassis 'bars'....

hope you'll find a solution soon.

SOURCE: Inside the cabin strong gas smell after fill up

One major reason for this kind of problem is filling the gas-tank too much. I suspect over-filling the gas tank in your case.
Driving within the highway speeds increase the amount of pressure created in the gas tank, which would likely result in leakage. Over-filling the gas tank should be avoided at all times, because each time the specification is exceeded, the system would not be able to handle it. So it is very likely to experience some leakage under this cirumstance.
On this car, the gas tank is located under the second row seat covered by the carpet. It could help to give the gas tank a good check to see if perhaps the fuel-pump gasket needs replacing. Another reason to check up the fuel-pump area is to make sure that no major damage had occured in the gas tank area with the previous owner that was not properly fixed. To get to the fuel-pump:
a. Start the engine.
b. Relieve the fuel pressure in the system by pulling out the fuel pump fuse. The fuse for the fuel pump is located in a box under the left side of the dash. Once the fuel pump fuse is pulled out, the engine stops, and the pressure is relieved. Turn off key in the ignition.
c. Open the hood and remove the negative terminal of the battery.
d. Take out the second row seats by activating the levers under them. Then pull back the carpets also from the second row seating area..
e. Remove the four screws holding the access cover of the fuel-pump. And then remove the electrical plug on fuel pump's sending unit.
f. Use a large pliers with rags to loosen the plastic lock-nut. Or consider a special loaner tool from a reputable autoparts store.
g. Disconnect the fuel-line hoses, noting their previous installed positions.
h. Take out the fuel-pump. Check the seals for cracks, distortions, etc.

NOTE: When returning back the fuel-pump seal, the seal must go in the hole first.(This method lets the seal avoid getting pinched or distorted). Then gently lower the fuel-pump assembly into its hole.
i. Reconnect the fuel-pump electrical connector; reconnect the fuel-pump fuse and the negative battery terminal, return back the second row seats and the carpets. Start the engine, and look for fuel leak.

Mazda 2008 mx5: I am getting engine fumes coming into the cabin via the cabin air intake.

There are a couple of things to consider...

First the cabin air intake is generally in a tray that once the engine compartment hood or bonnet is closed should be almost completely isolated from the engine compartment due to the rubber sealing strip and other rubber components. Perhaps some of these are missing or in poor condition. If heater intake water drains are fitted they should be self closing...

In good condition normal smells or fumes should not get past those seals.

The other consideration is where are the fumes coming from? Unless the engine has an exhaust or oil leak or a breather problem the amount of fumes generated to leak into the cabin, even if the sealing isn't in good order, should be minimal.

There's a gas smell inside the car.

Check your muffler for holes. The gases can enter the passengers cabin and it can smell like gas, specially if your car isn't burning gasoline completely due to bad tuning.

My 1994 dodge caravan has a slight exhaust smell inside the car while running. any ideas?

Three things come to mind. You may have an exhaust system leak. Or, the rear hatch is not closing good, or not sealing properly, allowing exhaust fumes to enter the rear compartment. If you drive with the rear windows open, the exhaust fumes will be drawn into the vehicle while the vehicle is moving. Just some ideas on where to look for the source of the fumes. Don't take the problem lightly. The fumes can be deadly, or at the very least, make you ill.

Exhaust fume in cabin

Get out of cabin! Somehow some way you have a leak in your exhaust sytem that is making it's way into the car. Or you have a situation where your setup allow exhaust in to car. If exhaust is trapped under car body because the tip isn't directing the gas away from vehicle, it may be collecting and entering vehicle. Fix exhaust system and direct fumes away from car. If you have fumes in cabin regularly, that is deadly. If you have an SUV or some kind of car/truck with a back window that rolls down (4-Runner or Tahoe, etc.) or opens into cabin space and the exhaust is under it, it may be being sucked into vehicle. Move exhaust tip. Check for leaks under car or an area where exhaust could build up or both as well. If your exhaust stayed in the system till the end and is directed away from car, this should'nt happen. Your manifold(s) leaking or something as well? Check from manifold(s) to tip(s) for major leak. Make sure exhaust is making it out the end of the system and away from vehicle. Don't be driving kids around in exhaust filled car or anyone for that matter. Hope this helps.

Awful odor when 1st open car door after setting for 15 minutes

You should have the computer scanned for fault codes. Many times the engine is running to rich and causes the catalytic converter to overheat. This will cause a rotten egg type smell.
Can you post back with a description of the odor? Does it smell like gasoline or oil?
It also could be a carbon monoxide smell that could be very dangerous, it is a possibility that exhaust fumes are entering the cabin of the vehicle, this could lead to poisoning.
Let me know what you find and if I can assist further. Lone99star

Unwanted fumes gas in ford falcon futura

is the car on recirculate or fresh air? air from your aircon comes through the bottom of your front windscreen, make sure its clear and free of leaves or anything that can cause blockage to stop it from become damp inside the aircon ducts. if it is definately petrol fumes you may have an exhaust leaking from your engine bay, releasing the fumes into your cabin, that is the most common reason for petrol fumes in your aircon.

Gasoline odor

You'll need to inspect every inch of the fuel system for leaks. I would start in the engine compartment. Chech injectors, fuel rail, lines to rail, etc. Check under car for leaks in lines, around tank. Use you nose to give you an idea where to start. Since it fills the passanger compartment I'm betting on the engine compartment in which the fumes could get in through the heater intake which is close.Look for wet spots. It could also be a leak in the evaporative emissions system which includes charcoal canister, purge system and lines but you'd probably have a check engine light with a problem in those systems. The hotter the vehicle and climate will make the leak harder to find due to evaporation.
