Battery placed in backwards

The system has to complete a certain number of drive cycles to complete the system readiness function, this is a mixture of stop and go, highway and idling, I admit it should have cleared by now, but try to do a mixture of driving, just highway won't do it, it should complete soon, if it doesn't then there is a problem that will have to be diagnosed.

Hi!
Sorry to hear of the awful incident.
I can't understand how your friend managed to hook up the jumper leads the wrong way without arcing or sparks flying off the leads as connection was made?
Are you sure You didn't try boosting it to 24Volts? to get away?
If so then as the ignition was turned on all the bulbs will have blown and possibly the burning was the Alternator frying.
If Not and only a very brief attempt was made then all may not be lost (Hopefully)
Before this incident are you sure the battery was flat and Not a faulty starter motor? if it was then the connection the wrong way will possibly have only blown the bulbs as I feel the problem lies with your starter.
When trying to crank the engine with a poor/low charge in the battery, Volts go down Amps go up cooking the wires in the starter making it feel/look like a flat battery afterwards even with a fully charged battery installed.
Firstly I would examine all ignition circuitry for cooked wires, then check all bulbs (Replace blown/fused) If the wiring isn't too bad then
I would replace the starter, install a fully charged battery, (Make sure you flash the positive lead before connecting properley to see if direct shorting isn't taking place) then try again.
If you have no luck then come back to me for more suggestions, I'll pop off to my Toyota Buddie and see if I can't scare up a wiring diagram.

Check your main relays in the fuse box under the hood, hopefully its blown one or a few of them before it did real damage to your wiring.

So you have a parasitic power drain when the system is off. You can narrow the fault quite quickly if you have access to an ammeter (multimeter set to DC current). connect the ammeter in series between the battery negative terminal and its cable. Note the power consumption when everything is off. Remove and return each fuse in turn and each time note the current change. Check them all just to be thorough. There will be one circuit fuse that will be responsible for the majority of the current draw. It is this circuit that needs to be examined for a short or maybe a light being left on (glove compartment and trunk courtesy lights are the usual culprits). It maybe that you cannot spare the time immediately to resolve the issue so in the mean time leave this fuse out and reconnect the battery, which should now hold its charge. Good luck
