It needs a valve adjustment. I am guessing about $150.
A pain on the Subaru because you have two banks of cylinders and each has a set of valves. Also, access is kind of difficult as they push to each fender.
I doubt if the valves are loose or need adjustment as the engine should have hudraulic tappets which adjust automatically when the engine is running. I suggest that your friend take off the rocker cover and see if anything is out of place. As the engine is 10 years old it is possible that the tappets may be badly worn and not working properly hence the noise
Lifter may be worn or cam lobe is worn and is probably due a timing belt replacement as well.Sounds like just a high mileage problem lots of people complain of valve train noise from these engines its not uncommon. I would use a high mileage engine oil to help with the noise but i am afraid the noise is only going to get worse over time you may look into salvage engine with a warranty or having the engine rebuilt it sounds like it is already burning oil. The valve lash can be adjusted on this engine but if your not a mechanic i do not recommend this, it is very sensitive procedure and can damage the engine permanently. Take it to a shop have them check your valve lash and adjust it for the noise issue to save yourself some time and money on a very costly repair with improperly adjusted valve lash. The valve clearance is 0.009"-0.12" for intake valves
0.11"-0.15" for the exhaust valves
The adjustments are made using different thickness shims below each cam lobe, special tools are needed.
The ticking noise can also be caused by a broken valve spring. These engines usually have oil pressure of about 10-20 psi at idle.
The ticking noise you are hearing is coming from the valves its not a big problem and the thicker oil may make the noise go away. Try using 10W30 oil if the noise still doesn't go away your valves may need to be adjusted which is recommended to be done at 60,000 miles anyway. Have a good day.
If your valves were fine in the past and they suddenly began to make noise then its a lifter or a cam problem. hydraulic lifters are not adjustable. 99 Cherokee 4.0 didn't have solid lifters.
the first [& easiest] solution is to change your PCV valve.if that dosen't make a difference,it could be valves need adjustment or a problem w/ a valve lifter.
My guess would be a sticking valve lifter. Buy a can of Gunk Motor Flush ( NOT radiator flush), use as directed, drain the oil and replace the filter, refill with clean oil, and see is the tick has gone away. Marvel Mystery Oil would work also if you can't find the Gunk.
