You have to find the reason the check engine light is on. This will aid in diagnostics. Also, are you buying fuel at the same place both times?
Testimonial: "yes we bought fuel at the same place twice. Usually we have no problem with their fuel and figured it was just a fluke if it was bad fuel. We did take the car to Autozone and had them read the code, they suggested mainly gas cap, but we checked that and have now had the problem a second time. If it is bad fuel are there any suggestions as to what to do, beyond not buy fuel there again?"
The problem may or may not be the station where you bought the gas. I only asked because if you went some place else, it rules out the station. I think there is something like water or another non-combustible liquid in you tank. It is usually water. When you fill the tank you stir up all the sediment on the bottom of the tank. It takes sometime for it to settle but, during this time the 'junk' in the bottom of the tank gets into the fuel system if the vehicle. Before going to get a repair, I think you should try a good fuel injector cleaner. I prefer Techtron. The next fill-up pour a bottle of it in the tank before filling. If the problem occurs but the symptoms are lessened either in time or intensity then you have an issue with your tank. Not the end of the world because the additive, Techtron, might clear is up with only the initial bottle. One other thing, get me the code number for the check engine light. I hope this helps!

It may take as much as 60 PSI to overcome the fuel pressure regulator. No, you can't blow through it. I suspect you have a fuel starvation issue. It could be a clogged fuel filter. It may more likely be a pressure leak inside the tank. That pressure gauge you mentioned comes highly recommended at this point. There is a flexible line connecting the pump to the metal line in the tank. If it ruptures, you have only minimal pressure, and the vehicle starves for fuel. Using the gauge, turn the ignition on and off a couple of times, (do not start) If the filter is choked, you will still achieve pressure to overcome the regulator. If it never makes that much pressure, then it is the flex or the pump itself. My first experience with this I found the rupture after the third pump! Embarrassing!
If you find my suggestions to be helpful, please share with us some details so that others may benefit from knowing the whole story. Thank you!

First thing that comes to my mind is a vaccum hose. My girlfriends car did this and i fixed it with a piece of 3$ hose. If the light is on you can take it to your local parts store and they can hook it up to a device that gives them the trouble code. They can then tell you what is wrong with it. Do not let them sell you any parts until you confirm that this is the problem. They sold my g/f a 300$ mass air flow sensor when the vaccum hose was all that was needed. Have a friend rev up the engine while you listen for a whistling noise under the hood. If you hear one this could be your problem. You could also have electrical issues such as a bad coil pack.
SOURCE: 2004 Sonata stalls out for no reason then won't start
hi there, i have a 2003 sonata and my car did the same. it stalled and the engine light stayed on but managed to get going again. i took it to Hyundai and it was the crank angle sensor. it needed replacing at NZD180.00 with 3 hours labour to do it. evidently they remove the front of the engine and cam belt etc. the workshop at Hyundai did it and charged 3 hours, not sure if that was excessive or not.
