That happened to my 1998 Olds Intrigue, and it was only a missing cabin air filter. The man changing my oil took out that filter and asked if I wanted to replace it. It looked very clean, so I said no, He then closed my car\'s hood. That was when my problems started. The person changing my oil just threw the" cabin air filter" away. After that my problems were (1) no air conditioning; (2) no heat; (3) windshield defrosters that couldn\'t defrost my windows anymore; and (4) dirt started appearing everywhere inside my car.
THE FIX: Just replace your air cabin filter (look in your owner\'s manual). If you don\'t want to replace it yourself, have someone at an oil change facility do it (those directions are near the end of my article) but it\'s a lot less expensive if you do it yourself. A new filter will cost you around $25.00.
HERE IS HOW THE CABIN AIR FILTER WORKS:
1.The cabin air filter draws air in, under the hood and from around the engine, through this filter to the inside of your car where you sit) to provide you with "fresh air."
2. Then the heater and air conditioner either warm or cool the incoming air, and blow it into your car\'s "cabin" -- circulating or recirculating it and making it warmer or colder (according to the controls on your dash) to make you comfortable.
3. If the filter is missing, you will notice these clues:
(1) if you have airborne allergies, they will be just as bad inside your car (even with the windows rolled up) as outdoors.
(2) You will also notice that after you clean the inside of your car, it will very soon need to be cleaned again (for example, the dash and the inside of the windshield) because there is dirt there that came through the open hole where the air cabin filter was supposed to be. (Don\'t worry, it\'s not an old-car-problem. It just needs the "air cabin filter" that is supposed to be there.)
(3) In the summer, the air conditioner appears not to work, but it is and you can hear it running! But when you have very hot outside air moving over a hot engine, and it moves right through a big empty "hole" where the air cabin filter should be, the air conditioner can\'t keep up with all the hot air coming in to where you are sitting and driving. That\'s not how the AC was designed to work. (And after I fixed that problem in my Intrigue, I never needed to add more Freon either - I had to turn the AC down so I didn\'t need a sweater in summer.)
(4) The same is true in the winter. When you have frigid air pouring into your car\'s "cabin" through the missing air filter\'s hole, the heater can\'t keep up with trying to heat the frigid air!And you may also find that your defrosters aren\'t working very well either.
Good News! All these problems are fixed at once, simply by installing a new Cabin Air Filter. You can either have a mechanic do it, or you can easily replace it with just one screwdriver for much less money. First check your Intrigue\'s car manual and find the correct filter size. then go to your local auto parts store for the replacement.
Next, use this link to learn how to do it yourself. It\'s easy. And this time you know it will be done correctly. Now, simply copy and paste this link into your browser\'s address bar, and you will be taken to a great video on how to find and replace the filter (and the instructions are free).:

It\'s extremely simple. The more you find about your car, the more you know, and the faster the fix times, and the less expensive the cost.
You provided a great description of your problem. Thanks, that helps a lot! Best wishes!

You are missing your car's Cabin Air Filter. It could be that a mechanic took it out while you were getting your oil changed, and asked if you wanted to replace the filter, and you said no, but he forgot to put the Cabin Air Filter back in place.
