When setting at a stop light the rpm's come up and have to press ******* the brakes to keep from moving forward under light. Seems to be worse when cold. Heat off and on---no air
If it is surging and then droping off it could be your idle air control valve.

Has the 'Check Engine' light come on? I had this problem at 30,000 miles and the trouble codes set were transmission component slipping. Ultimately required replacement of the transmission.

Check the stop light switch on the top of the brake pedal arm inside the vehicle. It may be stuck but can be checked very easily. Push the button in and out... should go smoothly and turn the lights on when depressed. Cheap to fix if that's it...

The distributor in that engine can only be installed in one position. The hold down is built onto the distributor meaning when it is installed and the engine runs the computer is responsible for the timing. The distributor will move a little but won't correct major timing errors.
