Question about 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

What size is the axle nut on a 97 jeep grand cherokee 4X4 5.2? Also what size are the E-torx on the back side of the hub?

I am needing to change the ball joints on my 97 jeep grand cherokee. I need to know what size axle nut is on this as well as the e-torx on the back side.

My socket set goes to 1-1/4": and 36mm.
my e-torx kit has all sizes, one can need.
with no sets. you must measure them. it's not covered in the FSM.
only 175ft/lbs on the axle nut and need for a torque wrench that big.

the better question is ,is the axle nut SAE or metric.
most real Chrysler built are metric.
so that big nut, at that torque needs 1/2' drive
and the torque wrench to match.

you could off the hub cap and measure the nut, with a metric rule.
the external torx same. with a caliper measure the head.
then use the e-torx table to mach it.
bet the first ever to post that. its rare to ask.
most folks just have the 2 sets. ( a life time investment if ever there was)

    my 08 has E18 torx, a M14mm hex socket fits over it. perfectly. that is how you check this , took me 5min. sure,,,, but any time you work on any car, you will find tools you dont have, comes with the package, rust, stripped bolts , stuck or what ever. damage. or other factors, or my impact socket split in half. this is what working on all cars are like (luck does happen) the correct tools are covered in the FSM i posted, but id does not cover, basic tools that is given. and you can measure them. keep in mine some jeeps have 3 different axles, and sometimes they switch brake parts mid. year, lots of possibles working on all cars. if you join the jeep forum they will laugh at this noob question, i will not. for sure there is no books stating all head sizes of all jeep made. you have to measure it your self or ask someone that just did 97. yesterday. keep in mind grab sockets from the rail and put them on , not even looking at size. (small print covered in grease) so you are trying to beat the $100 min. shop labor rate. you are attempting to buy tools for less than 1hr labor, my quetions is why., why try to cut it that close, buy the sets, and use them for rest of life.

    edit Slam/side hammer, got one.? all mech need one. or sit there with the missing sledge hammer hitting that poor hub to death. rust is a force, a force that doubles labor.

    I am sorry if I offened you. Thank you for the E-18 info. The set of E-torx I purchased went to E-16. So while yes I get to keep the tools I have no real use for them. Yes I understand that there is always variables such as rust and stripped bolts. However taking things halfway apart just to put back together and go purchase tools seems like a total waste of time to me. I did find some info that said the axle nut was a 36mm however that is actually incorrect and if I had purchased the set of 30-36mm sockets for $80 I still would not have the correct socket and would now be out $80. And yes I do understand that there are other tools required for this job. I was not asking about those tools nor am I a mechanic. I do however like to do the work on my vehicles myself and maybe learn something at the same time. I dont think anyone was born a mechanic and everyone learned this sometime somewhere.

    truly no offence, no that 36mm is max in set, i dont know my nuts sizes. and you can buy,barrow and rent tools, and can even sell them later on ebay, or even just mentioning them to friends at discount , boom gone.. fixing cars is a life time event. no car runs forever, and all that is correct, all work is a life time effort and learning experience, as kids we fix your bikes, then the motor cycle then the first dead car, the its addicting , maybe rebuilding classis like me (at 66yo) or racing. I gave that up long ago. What we do is buy the tools and dig in, learn as you go, and guess what, tools are 100% free, ever take the car to the dealer, and pay $1000 for labor, ??? see free tools, you will learn that as you go. but you can sell tools, anyone can, and now its 1/2 off. (free cash). All my tools pay dividends now , each time i touch them at 19 or at 66. If they are too ugly sitting a bout, put them in the attic.

    same with the FSM. read it and it pays dividends. from missing all those mistakes or better, saving a wheel from falling off at 80mph.

How to change left front axle


Assuming 4wd or AWD.
Remove wheel.
With someone in the car pressing on brakes, remove the center nut (pinion nut). I use impact gun once the retaining clips are off.
Now remove brakes (rotor and all)
Unbolt hubs (good time to replace them if needed).
Press hub off pinion. I use a large steering wheel puller/harmonic balancer puller.
Axle now will slide out of the hole where the hub was.
Consider replacing the ball joints at this time (use OTC ball joint press + the jeep specific adapters there is a slight angle to the inner C's and if you don't have the jeep specific adapters you will spend hours cursing .

Changing the axle (or hubs) is mainly an excercise it getting rusted bolts off. Changing ball joints - with the right tools - is not to bad.

Check with autoparts store for the torque values to tighten everything up.

Obviously check your brakes while you are in there.

You will have to get a wheel hub puller. It's basically a huge body dent puller with an attachment that hooks up on the wheel studs. You then pull out the entire hub and the axle slides out with it. The hub is what's holding in the axle.

Replace Front Wheel Hub Bearing 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 wheel drive


Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake caliper, caliper anchor, rotor and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  4. Remove the cotter pin, nut retainer and axle hub nut.
  5. Remove the hub/bearing mounting bolts from the back of the steering knuckle. Remove hub/bearing from the steering knuckle and off the axle shaft.
Installation
  1. Install the hub/bearing to the knuckle.
  2. Install the hub/bearing-to-knuckle bolts and tighten to specification.
  3. Install the hub washer and nut. Tighten the hub nut to specification. Install the nut retainer and a new cotter pin.
  4. Install the brake rotor, caliper anchor, caliper and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  6. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

How do I remove and install hubs on the front end of a 97 jeep grand cherokee?


It is actually very easy. Lift the vehicle and support it properly remove the 5 lug nuts retaining the wheel. Remove the wheel. If it is a 4 wheel drive remove the spindle nut locking the c.v. axle to the hub. Remove the washer. Push the axle through the splined hub. using a 13 mm or 15mm depending on the hub remove the three bolts reatining the hub assemble to the steering knuckle. assemble in reverse order.

Most times you can squirt some wd40 on the ends of the axle spline, then put the axle nut on backwards so the castellated side is towards the bearing hub and run it onto the threads till the axle and nut are flush. (So you don't damage the threads or mushroom the end of the axle.) Once you have done that you can give it a really hard shot with a decent sledge hammer (two lb or heavier) striking it as squarely as possible. I have never had one refuse to come apart when I do this!!!

Clunking noise in front when i only turn left in 2wd and 4wd but only when turning left.


The first thing I'd look at are the universal joints at each end of the front axle. You don't say how many miles are on it, but your Grand is old enough for them to need replacing. To remove them is fairly straight forward and not too difficult, just time consuming.

Lift and support the front end, you can put your jack stands under the axle. Remove the front tires, brake calipers and rotors. Next, you'll need to remove the large axle nut. To do this remove the cotter pin, then using a 36mm socket to remove the nut. I'm pretty sure about the socket size, but I could be wrong as it's been a couple of years since the last time I did this. If you don't have the right size socket, or the nut just won't budge, don't sweat it....you don't have to remove that nut to take it all apart. Next, you'll need a 12 point, 13mm socket to remove the three bolts holding the hub assembly in place. These bolts are on the back side of the steering nuckle. You have to have the 12 point socket as a 6 point won't work. However, if you have a 13mm closed end wrench, that will work as well, albeit slower than a ratchet. An air ratchet is really nice here. Once those three bolts are out, the hub should slide out. Don't worry if it won't, it may take a little coaxing with a mallet to free it. Some PB Blaster or other good penetrating oil will do wonders. Right now might be a good time to remove the differential cover to allow the old axle oil to drain out while the penetrating oil goes to work. Having this cover off will make reinstalling the axle shafts easier during reassembly. Whether or not you got that axle nut off will determine just how things happen next. If you got the axle nut off, then the hub assembly will slide out of the steering knuckle leaving the axle shaft in place, then you just pull the axle shaft out. If you didn't get that axle nut off, then the hub assembly and axle shaft will come out at the same time. The universal joint that you see approximately 4-6 inches from the hub assembly is what needs to be replaced. Unless you have a bench press, I'd take it to a local garage where they can replace the joint for just a few dollars plus the cost of the U-joint. Reassembly is the reverse of removal. You may have to rotate each axle shaft as you install them to make sure they engage the splines in the spider gears inside the differential. Don't worry, if you don't get them lined up, the axles won't slide all the way in. Once everything is back together, replace the differential cover and refill with gear oil.

You will need to remove the caliper and rotor, remove the bolts on the backside of the bearing hub and the axle nut in the canter of the hub. Once the hub has been removed, pull the axle through the hole where the hub was. Install is reverse of that. Best if you remove the axle nut before you begin. It is very tight and generally requires that you use a breaker bar and pipe on handle to get it free. (about 175 foot pounds torque)
