Try replacing the transmission filter and the trannie fluid. Mine would only go in reverse, and now it drives pretty well. This year has a screw on filter. Hope this helps

Hi
Sorry I'm being a bit vague but it is years since I've seen an auto. Get a torch and look at the back of the engine bay both sides down at the side of the block at the back . I think it is on the left standing at the front of the car looking at the windscreen . Offside in other words. (Drivers Side) If not there just look at the other side. I know it is difficult to see as it is just a metal stick . No yellow plastic on it. That is why I say use a torch because it is buried down at the back.

Again sorry for the vague reply but it is years since I've dealt with the auto. By the way. If the Auto transmission fluid is anything other than perfectly clean then something is wrong. Unlike engine oil , Auto gearbox oil should be perfectly clean. There are a lot of little valves in the bottom called the valve body. You only need a speck of dirt or grit to start it malfunctioning. So expect it to be very clean no matter how old the oil is. If not then expect a big bill.

SOURCE: 1994 Subaru impreza GLX auto won't go into reverse. No other gearbox problems, transmission fluid fine.

Drain all the transmission fluid, pull the pan, get a **** Chilton or Hayes manual, and get to the valve body of the transmission. That is probably blocked with all kinds of stuff. A lot of people would just say to flush it out, and replace the filter, but at this point, it might introduce more stuff back into the transmission, blocking the (possibly already blocked) high pressure lines. The valve body is much nicer to work on than the lines themselves.

On a 97 subaru impreza outback sport my transmission (automatic) shifts funny and sometimes slips completely but other times it shifts fine with no problems what gives?

SUBARU Automatic Transmission Solenoid A Dropping Resistor July 2, 2011. Author: Lewis Werner The SUBARU automatic transmission dropping resistor is connected in parallel with duty solenoid A. Duty solenoid A regulates the Subaru automatic transmission fluid line pressure. Like most of the transmission solenoids, duty solenoid A's duty cycle is varied by the transmission control unit (TCU) to control the line pressure.
The dropping resistor works with duty solenoid A in regulating the automatic transmission fluid line pressure. This resistor keeps a certain amount of current flow through duty solenoid A during the 'OFF' portion of its duty cycle. So in other words, duty solenoid A is never fully 'OFF'.
The dropping resistor is located on the right front shock tower, near the MPI (multi-port injection) fuel system dropping resistor. The photos at the right depict the Subaru automatic transmission dropping resistor.
If this resistor fails open, becomes disconnected, or has its wiring severed, one result might be increased shift shock. The reasoning behind this is that without the resistor in the circuit, the line pressure may be higher, since without the current passing through solenoid A during the 'OFF' portion of its duty cycle, it will tend to close further, and thus not bleed off as much pressure from the automatic transmission fluid pump.
If the resistor fails open or is disconnected, it should cause the ATF temperature lamp to flash 16 times on the next startup, since the TCU would be able to see electrically that the resistor is open.
This resistor was used on the SUBARU 4EAT phase I and 4EAT phase II automatic transmissions. It may also be used on the 5EAT though I have not confirmed it. http://www.scoobyenthusiast.com/subaru-components/subaru-automatic-transmission-solenoid-dropping-resistor

Finding where to put transmission fluid can be a bit of a challenge on some cars. In fact there are some transmissions that you can't even add fluid to.But that's not the case on your vehicle.

First confirm the level of fluid before filling it.==========For exact transmission fluid replacing/filling procedure.Go through the list of help links below:-----its having complete step by step procedure.Click the link :----

What is the AT OIL TEMP light? and if it is flashing, what does that mean?

That indicates an Automatic Transmission Oil Temperature problem. Your transmission is overheating. Check the oil level in the transmission, also when was the last time you had the transmission oil changed? This could be occuring because of an excessive load on the trans(pulling a trailer) etc. Generally if it is flashing it means stop now. Could be as benign as a failed sensor, but definitely needs to be checked out.

I have a leak in my 97 automatic subaru legacy and need to add some fluid to my transmission just to get it to a shop. It doesn't say in the manual or on any site I've been to where to add it or what kind...

The type best used is "Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid Type-HP or IDEMITSU ATF HP. you add it through the dip stick hole. You may also wish to add a transmission leak oil to swell the gaskets and stop the leak add it the same way if you choose to use it. both of these should be available at your local auto parts store like NAPA. Transmission oil

Yes the transmission fluid goes in the location of the dipstick. As for the yellow "oil", if you just recently got the car maybe the previous owner put engine oil in the tranny fluid receptor instead of the engine...it's been known to happen. As far as I know, tranny fluid should be red, even if water gets into it, it's still a pinkish color. Maybe better to drain it and replace it. Good luck.
