Yes, it can start with a bad alternator as long as the battery is charged up. You don't want to run it very long however because you can damage the battery.

The car runs but then will stall out. I changed fuel pump like mechanic told me to do. I had battery tested and was told it is good. The on dash message says check charging system...is this the alternator...

I doubt that the alternator is going bad, because when they do, the battery goes flat. More than likely, you have a bad voltage regulator, which starts to fail intermittently, or the cable that plugs into the alternator is loose or has dirty contacts.

My 2001 oldsmobile aurora, wont start in the cold mornings, unless i put a heat to the starter ?

the battery is going weak. check voltage at battery when engine is off, should be at least 13 volts if alternator is ok. when running if alternator is ok, then it should read at battery post at least 14 to 14.5

Location of Alternator

The alternator is along the engine, just follow the serpentine belt and you'll see it and yes the alternator can be rebuilt, but it's going to be more economical for you to go to Auto Zone and trade your old one for a rebuilt and Auto Zone can give you the step by step instructions to replacing the alternator. Auto Zone can also test your oil alternator to let you know if it is bad or not. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to answer any questions you may have.
