If you go to your local library you can get the steps for car repairs jobs printed out for you for free. its hard to find this type of info online. car repairs manuals are not free online but to libraries who purchase access for public. i have worked on 91 corolla timing. a few screws around housing and off it came. may have been some other parts needed removing to get it off too. like alternator, etc. not hard job

2009 Toyota Corolla 1.8 wont start

You should Not need to remove the valve cover as there are not normally timing marks on that area of the engine.
I think on these newer Toyota engines they use a chain not a belt. Most chain engine timing marks can be checked by taking off the end cover plates at the pulley end of the engine.

Water pump bolt broke off

Common problem. You are in for a rough ride my friend. The only way to fix that is to remove the rest of the bolts, the front crankshaft dampener pulley and take the timing chain cover off. Usually the bolt is seized into the timing cover itself and the timing cover ends up getting destroyed in the process. Once the cover is out of the way, the bolt will most likely come out fairly easilly with a pair of Vise-Grips.

Fortunately, a replacement timing chain cover is not real expensive. The trick is to get the [BLANKETY] thing off without causing any damage to the engine block. If you are going that far, I recommend putting a new timing chain set on it while you are in there.

Recommended parts: Timing cover gasket and front seal set, timing chain and gear set, and possibly a new timing cover unless you can get it off without ANY damage.

Keep in mind that if you have to pry it off and the pry tool leaves indentations in the gasket surface, or if you "warp" the cover, the timing cover MUST be replaced unless you want to do the job over to fix oil and engine coolant leaks. (It doesn't take much to make the thing leak)

Can i remove the timing chain tensioner from the top of the motor on a 2000 cavalier 2.2l or is that only with a dual cam?

Hi Friend:

Your Timing Chain Tensioner is located in the Lower Front of your engine.

#1) you'll have to disconnect your negative Battery cable.

#2) Remove the Top Engine cover to give you better access to the Front of Engine.

#3) Then you'll need to remove your alternator and with wiring attached put it off to the Side you might have to tie it with a wire to secure it.

#4) then you'll need to remove your Power Steering Leave the Lines on it and Put it to the sideas well , Tie off if necessary.

#5) then Jack up the front of your car, make sure you Put Good Stands under the car to keep it secure.while you work under it.

#6) then remove the TWO front Oil Pan Bolts Only the very 2-Front ones.

#7) Then directly above the Oil pan front of the Engine you'll see your Crank Shaft Pulley Remove it, You will need a Puller to Remove it.then the Timing Chain Cover, There are Several bolts Holding it on to the front of the Engine.

#8) Remove ALL the Bolts on Timing over, then Take cover Off,It could be a Little Stubborn ,if All bolts are out for sure, Take a Small plastic mallet and Tap the Cover Easily, until it comes off.

#9) Now before you remove anything else there is a Timing Mark on the Cam Shaft and one on the Crank Shaft,NOTE: BESURE you line them marks up,The Cam Shaft Mark should be pointing Straight Down--And the Crankshaft Mark needs to be Pointing Straight up.and Lined up with the Top Timing Mark.If the are Not

NOTE: Rotate the Engine by Hand Turning the Sprockets until they are LINED Up.

Then Take off the Top Cam Shaft Mounting Bolts, then Pull Sproket and timing Chain at the Same Time.

Then Loosen the Chain Tensioner Bolt with out taking it ALL the Way OUT. then remove your Chain Tensioner.

If your this far i Recommend that you Replace The Timing Chain,Cam Sproket and Crankshaft Sproket as well.

If not the Install your new Chain Tensioner,And Just Simply Reverse the Un-Install Directions. To Put All back Together.

Do Replace the Timing Cover Seal. Using Proper Seal Remover and Installer.

Also before you put your Timing cover back on CLEAN the Surfaces of the Engine and the Cover. And Use a Gasket Sealer and Mount to Block ==Lining Up ALL your Timing Cover Bolt Holes. Let it set a Short time a Few Minutes at Least. To prevent Slipping when installing your Timing Case Cover.

1- Last Thing Torque your Timing Chain Tensioner at 89 Inch Pounds.Which rewuires a Torque Wrench.

And Torque ALL your Timing Cover Bolts at 97 Inch Pounds.Do NOT Over Tighten You'll Strip them.

MAKE Sure the Timing Marks are Still lined up.

This will get your Timing Chain Tensioner Replaced. Thanks for using FixYa From: d_hubbs

Loud clicking noise coming from crankshaft pulley and goes away when a/c is on and when idle is higher. Why the noise?

Take a dry bar of soap and touch it against the sides of the belt(s) while the engine is running. If the noise goes away for a little while, the noise is from the belt settling into the grove of the pulley. Belts can really make loud pooping noises.

If this has no effect, then your timing chain may be too loose for the timing chain tensioner to compensate, and the chain is slapping against the inside of the timing chain cover.

If this is the case, do not let this condition go on. The timing chain cover is aluminum, and the chain is high grade steel. The chain will wear a hole in the cover if it is hitting the inside of it, and that is allowed to continue.

Replace timing chain cover on 1999 chevy van 2500

should be able to get the cover off with the engine in the frame. Just take out the grille and header support, then disassemble the front of the engine. If you are dead set on removing the engine, she comes out the front after taking everything out of the way.

Heavy ticking from top of motor on 1998 sl2. Thinking it's the timing chain at first but it is really sounding heavy on top of valve cover. Is it timing chain or valves. If valves what is likely cause....

Check your oil first. I guarantee your car burns oil and it may be very low on low. The ticking may be a lifter starved for oil or one that has debris in or on it. The timing chain usually makes a "slapping" sound when it gets slack in it from lack of tensioner adjustment.

A sure fire way to check the timing chain if you are concerned is to take off the valve cover (also a good time to replace the valve cover gasket). Then you can see the chain and feel and see if there is any slack in it.

Can Hear timing chain when starting. Only for about 2 seconds

If your only hearing it for a couple seconds, it's just the vehicle building up oil pressure and pumping up the timing chain tensioner. Over time the timing chain stretches and it takes a little longer for the tensioner to take out the slack.
