My four runner will sometimes just click when turning the ignition to start, nothing more. repeating several times will usualy get it to turn the starter when it starts easily. Is it likely to be an ignition or starter problem?

Check oil pressure regulator, the likelihood is oil pressure, pressure relief, need multiple times ignition, re-established oil pressure. auto key programmer
if an ignition switch fails, sometimes you can jiggle the key and it will start right up. its very hard to tell. but if you can start it by bypassing the ignition switch, then its the switch itself. go to this site for more detailed info--- aa1car.com/library/1999/cm119948.htm---this page should help. click on top link.
Does your security light flash if you turn your key to the 'on' position? If so, this is a Passlock problem. It should restart after 10 minutes. Here`s a possible solution that has worked for me. Have a new key cut from origional key or best condition key you have. Buy some Electronic cleaner and spray lots into the lock cylinder. Then, put your key in the ignition and turn from off to on position several times (5 to 10 times quickly). Then remove your key and spray again and repeat key turning. Do this several times. I don`t recomend any spray that is oil based. I no longer have issues with my Passlock system and I have almost 500 000Kms on my Impala.
Sounds like the starter is getting ready to go out. I'd look at being ready to replace it soon. If it is a stick shift transmission car, you can PUSH start the car, but you probably want to get it done before this happens. This is what mine did, click, click, start, over a period of about 2 weeks before it finally went out. Replaced it, starts first time every time now.
sounds like the ignition is worn out time to take the car to a lock smith rather than the dealer have then pull the ignition and file the pins if required and re key if required lock smith will charge you 75 bucks a dealer will charge you 250 dam dealerss will never learn
it sounds like the ignition is worn and has a stickey pinc usualy from a lot of keys hanging from it like more than 4 or prolonged use
usualy curriors have this problem too
key in key out 50 - 100 times per day
This truck has a switch in the shifter assembly that tells the ignition the truck is in Park or not. If the shifter doesn't hit that switch right this can happen. Also, there is a component in the ignition (a solenoid) that allows the key to be released if the Park switch is pushed. To be sure it's one of these two things, try this.... Get the key stuck, then disconnect the battery. If the key comes right out, it's either the switch or the solenoid. Good luck!
Does a light come on that looks like a lock?? This is GMs Passlock problem. It a fault in the ignition cylinder. The car won`t turn over. If you remove the key, the car will start in 8 to 10 minutes. Some have found that spraying an electronic spray or silicone based spray in the ignition and rapidly turning the key back and forth may help. Repeat this several times. Replacing the ignition switch is an expensive option, but may have to be done.
