Have you checked the CV Axles? Since the noise goes away turning left to right. Another slim possibility may be the brake calipers but you said humming. And I would (assume- which means not always so) stuck calipers would only make the noise in one direction.

SOURCE: 1998 Chevy Cavalier (Front end sound)

If I were you I would not use the car. It could be a bad wheel bearing or a steering tierod end thats about to go. Find out what the peoblem is first before driving. It could be several things. But a "thumping" noise sounds serious.

SOURCE: 2004 chevy cavalier makes a ''knocking'' sound

This could be any number of things. It could be your CV axle going bad, your tie rod joint has gone bad, your lower ball joint has gone bad. More than likely it will be your CV axle. What you need to look for is rips on any of the boots for these parts. The one that has the rip will more than likely be your problem. Just check for grease coming out of any of these parts and you will find your culprit because it has dried up and is causing the knocking sound. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks for using FixYa!

SOURCE: 1996 Chev Cavalier 2.2 automatic When backing

This would be your CV joint going out on that side. Probably has a bit of a grinding feel to it as well. The way to tell which side, and to confirm, jack up the suspected side until the front wheel is just off the ground. Leave the other side on the ground. Make sure you put it on a jack stand or block. Set the parking brake, and Start the car. Put it into gear, and turn the wheel to the side that it normally clunks. It will probably sound fine until you turn to the extreme, and then it will start clunking. Do the same for the other side, and it shouldn't do it. It's usually the outer CV joint that goes out, and often times you can see it by a torn CV boot.

SOURCE: 2008 siverado. Front-end humming. Sounds like

it is your wheel bearing. the bearing is a sealed unit so you replace the hub assembly. remove wheel, caliper, brake rotor.if it is 4x4 loosen axle nut. there are three 15mm bolts on back side of spindle remove these and slide hub out replace with new one. most hubs come with new wheel speed sensor so remove harness from connectors or if no new one remove the screw holding it in place to hub and slide out.

How do I change the fuel filter on 1996 chevy cavalier?

The filter should be in the fuel line under the car between the gas tank and the engine.
On some models it is in the engine compartment, and on others it is in front of the gas tank.
You squeeze a clip together on one end and the other end has a threaded pipe nut.
Make sure you release the pressure in the line before you take the line loose.

Chevy cavalier 1996 headlight not working, day

Did you replace the relay for the day time running lights which for some dumb reason is mounted under the front bumper? Climb under and look straight up and you should see it...mine was mounted in about the center (on the frame in front of the radiator. Sounds similar to an issue I had and it cleared up once I replaced the part...had to get from dealer still.

Spark plug

Open your hood.
While facing the engine. look straight down.
There will be wires there with boots on the end of them. There are 3 of them in the front by the radiator and 3 in the back by the firewall.
