    to be more specific... when accelerating I hear a popping noise along with the hesitation. I recently had to have the transmission rebuilt, needless to say there has been some work done to it recently. It wasn't doing all this before the "work" was done.

    could be related as this code 34 has a reference to the Cruise Control which whether your vehicle has this function the PCM might nthink it has i would return to who overhauled your transmission and show them the link i sent to you as they should be able to check if this is the case

You should definitely replace the fuel filter though this probably won't fix your hesitation. It wouldn't hurt to replace the spark plugs this is usually the culprit on these engine. I have the same engine in a '99 caravan and found the for some reason the spark plugs on cylinder 3 and 4 loosen up after one year and cause a misfire between 45 and 50 mph under load (when mildly accelerating).

A pop and hesitation is likely a backfire. The hesitation around 40 and 50 would be in keeping with that theory. There are several reasons you might be getting backfires and hesitation. If your ECM is adjusting the engine to run too rich this could happen. Misfiring might be occuring. Timing could be out. But one of the most likely is a restricted exhaust, likely due to a plugged, damaged or worn out catalytic converter. In some cases the converter may be bad enough to be giving you some performance problems, but not yet quite bad enough to signal an error. A vacuum test can help confirm whether this is exhaust related.

have you checked the fuel injector? if enough fuel is not getting through when accelerating it could "choke" causing the hesitation

It means there is a problem in the carburetor of your car . But if then so you still have to check the accelerator springs and pedal. For there are worn out or destroyed parts then replace them for good .About the carburetor.Prepare the equipment or tools to be used in servicing the carburetor .So that when carburetor will be repaired or serviced no parts will be damage or lost. Locate the carburetor. Disconnect the fuel lines , the accelerator cable and the magnetic jet from the carburetor.Dis -assemble the carburetor.Clean carburetor with carburetor cleaner.Don't forget to observe safety rules. If there are worn out parts or destroyed parts then replace them .But you the owner don't have time to do the job then go to a car shop mechanic and let them do the job.

I have occasional stalling when stopping for a light. and a hesitation when I accelerate usually around 40 miles per hour My service engine light comes on for a couple days and then goes out.
