How can we get a 1993 suburban sle won't come out of 4 high?

Just bought a 93 gmc suburban and we can not get it to come out of 4 high. When we put it in 4x4 nuteral, nothing happens, the truck won't move. When putting it back in park, it makes a noise like the gears are grinding. Do we need to drain the fluids, and hopefully not have to repleace the tranny.

The actuator is a common problem on these models. It is located on the front axle housing. Test it for power. If it has power pull it off and see if it works, if not, clean it or replace it. Use caution when removing the bolts. Very common problem.

Vlv problems within the tranny. Try flushing tranny and changing filter. Other wise it may need be gone through.

Both ATF and Power Steering Fluid are Hydrolic Fluids. They have different anti-wear and anti-foam qualities but it shouldn't damage the trans immediatly. I would definitly drop the fluid a few times and change the filter for peace of mind!!

SOURCE: i have a 4x4 1999 gmc suburban 1500 with a 5.7

unfortunately what it sounds like is the transfer case like you suspect. inside are bearings and gears and a chain what happens is the chain will stretch and cause this problem it will actually jump the teeth on the gears, you will need to have the chain replaced in the transfer case. sorry to have to tell you this but i hope it helps.

The sun-shell in the transmission has cracked if you do not have reverse, and are in a low gear range with no overdrive. As for the grinding, that is the remnants of the sun-shell.

When cold my '93 suburban dies but once warm runs fine it has a 454 with tbi

Have you checked to be sure the idle air control is working properly and also the engine temp control sw. The iac only comes on to maintain the idle when the engine is cold. The ect sw monitors the outside temp and tells the computer how much fuel to put to the engine. Hope this helps.

My 93 GMC suburban overheats. I will turn on the heater and cold air will blow out. Intermittently hot air will blow out and the tempreture will drop to normal levels. Im not sure where to look first.

The thermostat is bad, replace. Also, if coolant is dirty looking, you might want to take it to a garage and have the coolant system flushed. Good luck!

Check the trailer plug ground first. If in doubt. Ground in another location. Make sure the area is free of rust and the ground is tight.
