What other models front end are compatible with food explorer 5.0 awd? We just got our hub assembly on passenger and drives side changed. Mechanic told us our transfer case was going out, mechanic recommended pulling out the drive shaft and CV axles. We drove it for acouple days before pulling out drive shaft and cracked the front differential wide open. Now we have a busted upper ball joint on passenger side and I'm fairly certain the drivers side is going out as well even though the boot is still intact. When we drove it after pulling drive shaft and axles it was squealing very loudly and we lost brake power. The squealing stopped the second time we drove it, but now there is extreme vibration and a lot of grinding and popping coming from front end. My husband drove it yesterday and i noticed that the tires are sitting at an angle, pointing in toward the vehicle at the top. Pretty drastically. I'm thinking we just need a whole new front end and I'm wondering what other Food vehicles have compatible front ends. It is a 2001 Ford Explorer 5.0 V8 with AWD. This is our only vehicle, so if there is a cheaper way to fix or growing list of problems, any advice would be helpful. My husband can wrench it, but we have limited tools. Thanks!
Never drive that vehicle without the driveshafts installed, it WILL RUIN the transfer case. Find a real mechanic to find out how much damage you did.
Thanks, Jerry. I'm pretty sure the damage is pretty extensive judging by the noise and handling of the truck. I think we've already ruined the transfer case. The VC is definitely seized up at the VERY least. In order to get it all fixed, were looking at a new transfer case, front differential, drivers side CV axle and both sides upper ball joints (and possibly hub assemblies and/or tie rods after driving without axles). 2nd generation Explorer with AWD are really hard to find in our area. That's why I'm trying to find out if, say, an F150 would be interchangeable. Those are a dime a dozen at our local pull a part

Has the car been in an accident? You may have to replace the upper ball joints as well. And you will have to get an alignment after that. I would get the tire set correctly before I started changing bearings. Of course it may be that the bearing is so bad that that is what is causing the wheel to lean so badly?
With the car jacked up, can you move the wheel laterally - it should be very tight.

Try getting a free quote from several reputable shops before deciding to throw down your money on something your not certain of. Im not dissing your mechanic by any means, it doesnt cost anything to get another opinion or two or three....Its your money!

Sorry for the grammar and spelling. Between auto correct and stress, things get ugly. :)
