Vehicle won't come out of 4w low how do I get back to drive
Reverse for 20-30 yards on a smooth surface and in a straight line should disengage it.
You will have to remove the shift motor from the transfere case and rotate the selector shaft manually.
You probably need a mechanic to do this.

Place transmission in neutral, keep foot on the brake. Turn vehicle off, now try to shift from 4WD Low to 2 WD High. If it goes in you will feel it slip in and double check to make sure. Restart vehicle and try to put it in drive, if it worked the 4WD light should go out and it should drive normal ---- all else fails read owners manual to make sure your doing it right.
Probably need to get a new transfer cas
Some times the drive train binds up and won't release straight away. The way to overcome this is to select 2 high and put the car in reverse. Give the accelerator a little jab and that will take the load off and the front hubs will disengage. The light on the dash should go out, if so then all good. :)
SOURCE: stuck in 4x4 low range
My wife just recently had a similar problem. She got stuck in the mud and put our 2004 F150 in 4x4 Low to get out. She didn't. Had to have AAA pull her out. She then left a bit later and the truck was still in 4x4 Low even after switching to 2WD. She even tried going backwards to get it to switch. So she called me frantically because the car would not go over 10 mph w/o the RPMs getting way too high. I said I'd call her back. So I called our local Ford Repair shop and he gave me these instructions (loosely based on what the owner's manual says to do) 1. Start Vehicle 2. Switch to 4x4 Low 3. Put in Neutral 4. Switch to 4x4 High 5. Go in Reverse for a bit and then Forward a bit again (You should now be in 4x4 High) 6. Put in Neutral 7. Switch to 2WD You should now be good. If that didn't work, then try repeating step 5 after step 7. Which reminds me. I really should call her back :) (It worked)

air line might have got broken or pulled off of the vaccum motor for the 4x4 control unit under the front
SOURCE: wont disengage out of 4 wheel drive 1998 ford
Be sure to put the truck in neutral, while engine is running, while you disengage from 4 wheel drive (low) to 4 wheel drive (high) and then finally to 2 wheel drive. It is critical to shift transmission into neutral when switching out of 4WD Low, as indicated in your owner's manual. Hopefully, this will help to FixYa problem!
