I had a rattling noise in this truck after it was cranked for a little while now, and it broke down one day.i think the chain has jumped time or has broke.i know this is an interference engine.it will not turn over, but we took the plugs out of it and it barely turned over.it has had 2 tming sets put on it since the person i got it from had it.it has about 215000 miles on it
Could be a bad chain guide or tensioner.I've got a 85 Nissan 720 4x4 2.4 with a Weber carb.Had her since 1993.It had 108,000 miles on it when I got it.Not long afterwards,Carb went bad,no one could rebuild it,tried 3 places. Finally took to Nissan Dealer, they told me that the carb was a bad design and they could not rebuild, they told me it was junk, they were right, not long afterwards motor went bad,so I got a remanufactured Jasper motor, with 3 year-or 100,000 mile warranty, got it in 2009,I now have 61,000 miles on it with a new Weber carb and it runs awesome, never ever had a timing chain issue, speedo now has 344,000 miles on it.Had the engine installed by a Jasper engine installer,a pro, seems like whoever has been putting timing chains in your engine is clueless on these 2.4 engines, our Nissan's have a history of head gaskets blowing, never timing chain issues. Here is a link on how to replace your Timing chain. I would venture to guess that a timing chain guide broke and the chain chewed a hole thought the timing cover. The timing cover also has coolant passing through it where the water pump is attached. If you were running a multi viscosity oil, even it it were a 20-40 and got surprised by a zero degree day, I doubt seriously, it would cause that to occur. That series engine had problem s with timing chain guide failures. However, there usually is some chain rattle well before a disastrous failure. Most of my customers noticed the chain noise before it has caused catastrophic damage.
Sorry you have suffered such a loss. Good luck on your repair. A used timing cover would be the cheapest route. A place in Dallas called Bishops, buys engine cores, dismantles them, evaluates them, cleans the good parts up and sells them at very reasonable prices. They ship all over the country.
I'll send you 2 pictures, 1 will be your engine. I picture in each post.

I have a 2002 maxima with 75k mile and heard a rattling which died down after it warmed up.
It was a bad timing chain pulley. Don't wait too long before fixing that!
SOURCE: 1995 nissan pickup truck fuel problem
Fuel injected or carb? Make sure fuel line itself is clear. Some pumps are designed to self regulate (carb systems) some continually pump and a psi regulator sends back the excess fuel back to the tank (fuel inj systems) If the line is obstructed then pump can't deliver fuel fulltime.
If you think pump is not on consistent, try running a dedicated wire through a switch directly to the pump. If it works then you are looking for an electrical fault going to pump. Good luck.
