My 92 pontiac grandam 5 sp is making a whirring sound from underneath the car. When i drive it, it seems harder to get into gear, but it is not grinding gears. When in 2nd or 3rd or 4th gear......the engine acts like it is working harder than normal. Could it be my clutch or transaxle going out? Also, what would happen if they go out while I am driving?
Does the noise change pitch when you weave the steering wheel right to left going down the road?
Try that, it might be wheel bearings.
Grinding when shifting or whine when driving. Usually if it's the trans the whine will get quiet in 4th. Have you checked the fluid level in the transmission? When you say it is working harder, does the engine rev up or do you just have to push harder on the gas for it to go?
I'd have to look up the fluid check procedure. I think it has a little dipstick near the vehicle speed sensor. But I think your problem is wheel bearings or brakes.

not that i noticed......but it does seem to get louder when I accelerate
Can i ask what the symptoms of a bad transaxle would be? I am afraid something is going to break on my car before I can get it in to be checked out.
I have to push harder on the gas for it to go. This may sound stupid...but i know where the brake fluid is and the coolant...where is the trans reservoir to check? Also...what will happen if the transaxle goes out?
