BMWs in the 3 Series and 5 Series that come with the 5-speed ZF transmission commonly experience problems with torque converter delamination. Drivers will notice signs of this problem when the car appears to shudder or misfire at around 40-50km/h.
This BMW transmission problem needs to be repaired as soon as the first signs are noticed. If you drive until the converter lining actually fails, it can destroy the entire pump assembly in the transmission. This will require a complete reconditioning of the automatic transmission.
BMW drivers are cautioned that it is better to spend a little now, rather than a lot later.
Apart from the problem with the torque converter delaminating, these 5-speed transmissions commonly suffer breakage of the D/G cylinder. If this breaks, the car loses reverse gear. This automatic transmission problem is another that requires a total transmission overhaul to repair.
Common fault with the reverse drum in transmission. BMW are in all sorts of trouble over this transmission. this is the check engine light does it come on then off? did it stay on? if this light is comming on any one of a hundred or more thing can cause it. from a loose gas cap to a sticking sensor. you might want to have it hooked to a computer to see what is causing it might be a minor problem like low washer fluid and it could be the start of a serious one. these lights remind you of scheduled maintinance, low fluids, oil changes ect depending on the manufacturer standards.i would check all of the fluids and if they are ok then get it checked better to be safe than sorry
Start with replacing transmission fluid. They do recommednd Dextron III but usually syntetic oil 5w-30 does this job very well. But grinding sound maybe the sign of transmission problem
You can take it to a qualified shop (I dont know there you are), and had them run the codes for the transmission (OBD I)
