Ajkill is right. I had the same problem with the fuel light always being on and the guage read empty no matter how much fuel is in the tank. I had to have the fuel level sensor in the tank replaced. This is something that they have to drop the tank for. It was about $400 with the part and labor at the dealership.

SOURCE: fuel sensor gauge

you will need to replace the fuel level sensor.(sending unit) it is in the tank and is hooked to the fuel pump. you can buy seperatly from pump. you may finf it easier to remove the bed if you have some help. it is six or eight bolts and harness unplugs then you can get right to it.

Common problem on the 03-06 Silverado instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Why fuel guage is not working

Hi dear,
If the fuel gauge does not work must be verified:
1. gasoline pump gauge wire if it is cut
2. Remove the gasoline pump and check the float arm if it is stuck
3 . Electronic Resistance in the gasoline pump damaged and need to replace

2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Can't find anti-slosh module

I've never had to replace one, but I do know that it is somewhere in the guage cluster. Although, chevy trucks have always had a problem with the fuel guage "floating" up and down.

2006 ENVOY fuel guage reads empty after fill up. What is the cause and how to rectify?

Usually I find there are two common causes for this problem. If the gauge goes to empty after a fill up but then starts to work and be fairly accurate as the fuel level in the tank drops then it's often the fuel level sending unit which is attached to the fuel pump module inside the tank. I have seen some guages go bad also [actually the servo motor that runs the gauge] but usually the gauge will stick in one spot and rarely move or go to either end of the scale and stick there. A good shop should be able to determine the cause of your problem pretty quickly. Hope this helps and good luck!

Fuel gauge problem

sending unit on the fuel pump in the tank is stuck, and needs to be replaced. its expensive, but that will fix your issue. its the housing around the pump that has the float arm on it. you can try to free the float arm by removing your pump assembly, but cant guarantee its any good after being stuck

Problem with fuel guage on my 1994 Mercedez Benz C180

There is no gauge in the fuel tank, the fuel sending unit is, that sends the signal to the fuel gauge in the dash to show how much is in the tank. Apparently, the sending unit is shot.
