Random Misfire I just purchased a 2002 Durango with a 4.7L 140,000 miles. Here is the Problem I'm getting a flashing check engine light, when I pull the codes I get p0300 (random misfire) p0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire), p0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire), p0304 (Cylinder 4 Misfire), p0307 (Cylinder 7 Misfire). It had auto lite spark plugs installed that looked good, I installed champion oem plugs all gaped to .040. I moved coil packs around. cleared the codes, drove it around a little it came back with the same codes. the check engine light goes out when I restart, and usually only comes on when I do a High acceleration take off. Also I do not feel the misfire, it seems to run great with no hesitation. Any Ideas? has anyone heard of electrically charged coolant? I have never heard of this but seen it on another site, they said it could cause the multiple cylinder misfire like I have, but they didn't get into any detail. any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

There are several sites online that explain electrically charged coolant and what to do about it. The following link may be of help. http://www.ehow.com/how_7859419_rid-electrolysis-radiator.html

This can be due to a leaking pressure regulator and or the injector lines leaking. These are located under the plenum, which has the throttle body mounted in the center.

No, the fuel leaks into the intake manifold and is then suckedinto the cylinders. This causes multi cylinder misfire due to the extra gas that is leaking in.

  • Gary Allor May 30, 2014

is there anyway to check this?

  • Daryl Gleaton May 30, 2014

A fuel pressure gauge amy show a drop in fuel line pressure if it is a significant leak.. Do you see black smoke coming from exhaust when starting unit? If the regulator or lines are leaking the check engine light should be on, is it on??

  • Gary Allor May 30, 2014

no black smoke, an as stated in the original post yes the check engine light comes on flashing the codes are all related to misfire ref original post. also it runs an drives fine. the only way u can tell there is a problem is by the check engine light, otherwise you would never know

  • Daryl Gleaton May 30, 2014

Sorry about the check engine light, I got two different Durangos confused. The wires can cause the misfires in different cylinders. Try wetting wires by spraying water on the wires with a spray bottle, then look at the wires for signs of cross sparking. This is easier to do when it is dark, as the spark jumping between the wires will be easier to see. If they are bad you will see the spark jumping between wires. Other than this there is only the pressure regulator and injectors and or lines leaking that would throw a random cylinder misfire, or multiple cylinder misfire. When leaking bad it will throw out black smoke on startup, but a small leak may not. Here is a link for extremely low cost fuel injector assemblies. email: [email protected] or call 877-525-5233 to order. They have these parts for less than half of what you would pay at an autoparts store. I can walk you through the repair process if need be.

They may be able to give some feedback as to your problem.

  • Gary Allor May 30, 2014

Ok I will look into some of that, but there are no wires they are individual coil packs.

Sputtering engine while in passing gear

At 150000 miles the plugs start to fail under hard acceleration the higher compression blows out the spark before it ignites the fuel. Random cylinder misfire causes the check engine light to come on. change the plugs!

2002 Envoy sle 4.2 L straight 6. Random misfire(PO300). After erasing codes for several days, I finally took my car on the highway and ran it at high speed(70+) for about 4 to 5 miles. Check engine light came on as before but this time it gave me(PO305). Random misfire cylinder 5. So I switched coil 5 with coil 2. Went back out on the highway and repeated as before. This time it gave me(PO302). This was telling me I had a bad coil. Replacing one coil pack solved the problem. The professionals told me low fuel pressure would not give me random misfire, but rather a O2 code because the engine is running lean. I somewhat agree with other solutions on this page. I agree that what you are describing is a severe misfire, however there are MANY possible causes for a severe misfire other than just the spark plugs...I recommend diagnosing the CAUSE of the misfire before spending any money "GUESSING" and replacing a bunch of parts.

Also, a code P0300 is a "RANDOM MISFIRE" code which indicates that there is definately more than one cylinder misfiring. Your computer MAY display this code, however, a SINGLE cylinder misfire can also cause a loss of power and the check engine light to flash.
You may just have something like a bad coil on one cylinder that needs to be replaced. This is why PROPER diagnosis is recommended.
