SOURCE: engine idol knocking noise stalls while holding on footbrake
Hi portop,
Have the valve clearances checked, it could be tappits noise.....Has the vehicle ever been over heated? How's the power output from the engine, has it changed since you've had the vehicle? Does the sound disappear completely, or is the knocking sped up so it's faster and becomes hidden?
I think that it will be a good idea for you to have a technician listen to the engine, to make sure that you don't have a serious problem. Get two or three opinions

check for vaccum leak or check throttle body and clean

Ok, tricky to diagnose over net but the most obvious will be idle control valve.
If IAC ok then check coils
If coils ok then check that the Pre (before cat) Lambda is switching ok
If Lambda ok disconnect the positive + lead off the battery and hold it to earth for a few seconds then leave disconnected for 10 - 15 minutes (this clears all poor data stored) then reconnect battery and try car.

I'd look for a vacuum leak, possibly the large hose that goes to the brake booster-use a can of throttle body cleaner and spray around hose areas while engine is running and listen of drops in idle-there's your leak.
SOURCE: I have a 1994 toyota camry 4 cyl. When I first
scan the computer with a computer scanner just to see what it says. check your intake, I am thinking your mass air flow sensor is no good. it happened to my car where the rpm increases and decreases when the car is idle. Or it can be the IAC valve.
