2004 Freestar surging/lurching at a stop and only in gear. There are no codes showing. 3.9L V6. It seems to drive fine, but when I stop it almost shuts off, and then surges horribly lurching the van back and forth violently. I have to keep my foot on the brake to keep it from surging forward or put it in neutral. It has not actually shut off though. And then randomly, it gets over it and runs ok for a while. Overall, it seems to be getting worse with time.
Try a new mass air flow sensor or clean the one that is there. Also make sure the plug to the sensor is good
As there are no codes to help we'll have to start with the basics , when was the trans fluid last changed ? if not recently i'd start with that , also put a fuel addative in the next time you fill tank , get one that covers the catalytic converter as well as the valves etc keep me posted if you wish

It sounds like the shifter lock out solenoid has gone bad.It is a solenoid that releases the shifter when you push the brake pedal.

check the swiches at the brake pedal their should be two. one for brake lights and one for transmission dump valve it prevents the engine from loading up at lower rpm. ie stoping at lights while in drive

Its a common fault with the fords. The air throtle idle valve needs to be replaced.Or you may call it a tapper valve.

Have your altenator checked. Sounds like it trying to stop charging. May be internal votage regulator.
SOURCE: 1990 Ford Probe 2.2 automatic stalls in forward, reverse OK
Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.

The trans fluid was changed with the last oil change less than 3,000 miles ago. We have also used the fuel additive which you described. The torque converter has also been replaced (as it had similar symptoms & was under a recall). The idle has also been adjusted. We keep taking it back & forth to garages and no one to date can figure out the cause or solution unfortunately. Thank you for your suggestions! Any further would be welcome
poor crankcase ventilation can cause the engine to surge , might be worth checking that out
