You need to relearn the passlock system (security). There are 2 ways. One is with a scanner, which most diy'er wont own an expensive one to do it this way, here is the manual way. Start the truck and let it run until it dies. The security light should then be flashing. Leave the key in the run position until the security light stops flashing (about 10-15mins). After the light stops flashing turn the key off. Try to start the truck again. It should do the same thing (run for a few seconds and then die with the security light flashing). Again wait for 10-15 mins for the light to stop flashing and then turn the key off and repeat the process one last time. That's a total of 3 times. Once you finish the process the 3rd time. Let the truck sit for a minute with the key off. It should now be programmed and start and run normally.

Turn on the key. The security light will start flashing. Leave the key in the ON position. Wait approximately 10 minutes. The security light will stop flashing. When it does, turn OFF the ignition key. Now, turn ON the key and start the truck. Done. The security system is preventing your truck from being stolen for 10 minutes.

Thanks Jacob. I had this same issue a few times in the past. Working on customer cars. The battery was totally dead and had to go through the process after the battery was replaced. Only had to do it one time, however.

1. WHO changed the ignition switch, you or a certified tech?
2. Do you have any error codes and warnings showing on the dash?
3. Does your key have a chip in it?
4. New switch, new key with chip programmed for the switch.

That year does not have a chip in the key, I have a 98 that is to be replaced also, btw, you dont have to be a GM MECHANIC to do the job! Still check to make sure you are connected good on both ends, undo pos side of battery for 10 to 30 sec.or so, drive around if it runs, go to get a Diengnostic scan

Are you using the same original key? If the old key had a black chip inserted in it (Clearly visible) and you are using a different key without the chip, you are not shutting off the security feature of your truck on start-up! You could try taking the old and new keys to a Chevy dealership to see if they can cut you a new key with the proper coded chip installed.

Sounds like a loose wire somewhere around that switch you replaced.

Did you check if you need to have security keys programmed?
Call a locksmith or a dealer with your yr/make/model and inquire about the ignition change post-work.
I think you will get your remedy :)

Your security module was it replaced from the old switch or you kept the original with the ignition switch if it wasnt switched your key is not coded for that module you might have to take it to dealer and have them reprogram it or switch it back from the old ignition and if you want to try i dont no if it will work for that vehicle but it wont cost anything to try you need to put a battery charger on the battery to charge battery while your trying this now the charger is on the battery put the key in the ignition and put it on to start but dont start it are all the lights on in the dash is the little lock sign lite up on the dash keep the key on for a hour and see if the security light goes out after a hr dont turn ignition off try to start it and see if the sucrurity light stays off good luck

SOURCE: truck will not stay running after removal of security system.

You probably need to do the relearn process to reteach your ECM or PCM . dont try to start it but turn the key on for 10 mins until all the idiot lights go off, turn the key to off for 5 seconds and repeat the process 2 more times for a total of 3 cycles. It should be fine after that. I am no expert but it worked for mine.

SOURCE: i have a 1999 s10 and changed the ign key and now

If you have the second ignition key's with you try it.  If not try this, it takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help.

Either security chip in the ignition switch has failed or the security system has triggered. Try turning the key on and let the security light flash till it goes on steady. If it does not start, change ignition lock.

Security light on car wont start

Yea the car is in lock down mode. Something triggered the security system, and as a result, the computer engaged the ignition kill. Disconnecting the battery alone wont solve the problem. What I would suggest is call a local Chevy dealer and ask to talk to a technician, they know the procedure and can walk you throuogh it right over the phone.

1994 cutlass supreme security light stays on and does not start

their is two wires they are white and go in to a orange sleve that sould be on the ignition switch, that is part of the security system in the car. It runs down inside the colunm and plugs in uder the dash. This is most likley your problem, the wires might have a short.
