2004 Navigator - When the enertia is going forward the dash vents will blow cold air when the enertia changes the vents dont blow air on the dash but everywhere else is fine... i am assuming its the blend door actuator? Could it be a sensor or wire loose ? or do you think the whole actuator must be replaced? HOw many hours should it take an average mechanic to fix?
The blend door is plastic with plastic hinges that eventually break. If you go to a dealer, they have to remove the entire dash to get to it and it will cost you over $1000. There is an aftermarket door with metal hinges that you can replace by going through the glovebox and cutting through the duct. (You seal it later withe epoxy so it's airtight.) You also have to remove the center console, which is also how you can verify the door hinges are broken. Once I had all the tools and everything ready to go it took me about 3 hours. The fix will outlast the car (which has 463,000 miles, BTW).

ase mechanic:
there are separate actuators for the blend doors. one for heat and one for cool. they work opposite and in conjuction with each other, if that makes any sense. ones open, ones close, for each different climate. sounds like the the cold one isn't opening in the rear.

SOURCE: How to replace a Blend
Blend door mixes hot and cold, not a distribution control. Look for loose or dislodged vac lines... Heater designed to fail in defrost mode.
you have a vacuum leak in the selector switch for front heat explorers had similar problems
Testimonial: "Thanx. Is this something that can be fixed by myself or do I need to take it to a shop?"
