Question about 2004 Ford Ranger

1 Answer

My 04 Ranger Edge dropped speed and the a/c stopped working while driving on the Interstate. The road is smooth, 91degrees, and had been running for about 1 hour after fill up. I pulled off the road, shut off the engine, after not finding anything wrong, I started the truck. Everything worked fine, but the a/c stopped 10 minutes later. I drove home 45minutes. I started truck today with both the engine running smooth and the a/c working fine.

Make sure your system is charged properly. Also make sure your cooling system is properly clean and filled up to max levels. Sometimes low freon or old cooling system fluid will cause a delay in the A/C to work. Also chech to see if there is any black powder around your A/C clutch, if so, this is a sign that the system is about to go out of service. You can get a great deal on the part from Amazon.

First try changing the fuel filter. It is extremely easy and costs about 12 dollars at Wal-mart. If that doesn't work than try changing the fuel pump itself. Little more costly but still pretty simple to do.

SOURCE: my truck blows white smoke

There are two differnt reasons for black and white smoke coming from the tail pipe.
Black smoke means fuel runs rich (car getting to much gas). Check fuel pressure/air filter.
In some cases the white smoke means car is burning oil or transmittion fluid. Have tem checked/replaced.
If you can feel a smelly smoke it can be catalytic converter.
In a worsest scenario if car blowing white smoke it can be engine coolant is getting into an engine cylinder from a bad head gasket ,or a warped/cracked head. So you need to keep your eye on coolant level and check your engine for overheat. Also might be good to check your oil for traces of coolant (on a dipstick it would be a milky substance mixture of oil and coolant).
Good Luck

SOURCE: Truck just stops b- 2005 Ford F150 80,000 miles

I had the same issue i changed the fuel fillter it was a little dirty but not bad. Still had problem then i cleaned out the throtel it worked good for a while. Ended up replacing the throtel its about $250 if you do it yourself which is not hard to do. The problem is the electronic throtel control but you have to replace the whole thing not sold seperatly hope that helps. Been running great did that 15,000 miles ago.

SOURCE: 2004 ford ranger edge 3.0LV6. Truck died as I was

I would replace the fuel shutoff switch with a used on from any junk or salvage yard close to you...
They unplug easily...

I have never herd of one going bad...
all it is is a metalic ball that sits ontop of a magnetic prong conducting the power to the fuel pump for as long as the ball stays on top of the prongs... when you flip the truck ... it is designed to disconnect the power to the pump... by jarring the ball from its perch....

but thats what I would try.

SOURCE: 1988 ford ranger 2.9 ltr engine stalls while driving , restarts in a few minutes usually

There are several possibilities, but based on how you described the symptoms I suggest a profile igniton pickup. On these systems the failure usually begins as dropping a cylinder occasionally, like a misfire, mostly during high underhood temperatures, will manifest into stalling and finally into a stall with no resart condition. Symptoms are most likely to occur in summer. The pickup is inside the distributor and the distributor must be disassembled to install it,the trickiest part being the removal and installation of the distributor drive gear. They are iron and easily broken. The simplest solution is another distributor. The ignition modules typically do not fail in this manner, but this is classic for the pickup coil. A code for loss of pip signal should be present, it is possible for a code to not be present, though very unlikely. Having worked on these systems for years this would be my first area of diagnosis.

My 92 Chevy with a 350 plugs set .035 new cap new rotor. Starts up ok idealso good oil pressure is good water temp is good. Interstate holds 80 no problem. But at take off she bogs also low rate...

Well if the timing mark is jumping around that's a good sign that the timing chain is streched and there is play in the chain that could cause the timing to be off does it ever stall out after it bogs and going up hill on the interstate that's your over drive kicking in and out trying to keep you at speed try timing it at the correct timing then take it on the road when you start going up a hill take it out of over drive see if that stops the shifting up an down good luck

My 2002 ford ranger edge stalls when coming to a stop at a red light. If it does not stall it begins to run rough when coming to a stop. While this is happening my battery gauge drops and the returns to...

The battery gauge drops because the engine RPM's drop, this reduces the output of the Alternator. The cause of this is likley a dirty intake valve and idle speed control vlave, clean them by following the instructions below.

To correct this problem Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (it is made by CRC) from the local auto parts store, NEVER USE CARB CLEANING SPRAY, IT DESTROYS THE ANTI-STICK TEFLON COATING, spray it into the air intake through the throttle body of the engine until you have used about half the can, you will need to hold the idle up while you do this, it will try to stall, after this shut the engine down and disconnect the Negative (-) battery cable for 5 minutes. The intake is now clean, if you continue to have the idle speed control problems you may need to seek the help of a professional.

Getting a hard shift when going into overdrive. More obvious if I let up on gas and then back on when traveling hillier terrain. Less of a problem when getting on Interstate travel where speed is more...

Believe it or not, It might be the fan clutch. I fought my trans for 3 months with the same issue before I realized the fan clutch was bad. It would rapidly lock and unlock at the rpm range that the overdrive shifts at. Sometimes it felt like I was on a dirt road that was washboarded.

Check to see if the fan rotates freely 360 degrees(With engine STOPPED, of course). There should just be smooth resistance. Also check if there is any play by trying to rock the fan fore and aft. There should be no slop.

After I replaced the clutch, the trans shifted fine and even a check engine light went out.

A shuddering fan clutch will send hard vibrations through the truck and mimic a trans issue.

Since the ride is still OK, I would hold off on the strut replacement, but I would try some silicon spray for rubber on the suspension rubber parts (and strut assy) and try to stop the squeaking that way. Hope this helps because I would have guessed brake noise before strut noise.
